Heteropneustes Fossilis/Asian Stinging Catfish

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
... I had one up until last week when it somehow vanished from a completelly covered tank. That tank was damn near sealed and i still havnt found it anywhere in or out of the tank

Wow. Tell us more. Was the water level too high? Is the tank outside?? I mean you would have found it if it was inside, right?

---Yes, this refers to state permits since private-keeping permits are controlled by the state in which the animal is to be kept.

---I was referring to private-use applications. The federal gov't has no permit application for pet keepers. That's controlled by the state where the animal is to be maintained. Federal gov't applications and permits revolve around importation, customs, and commercial/institutional maintenance of restricted species.

So my prior summary is pretty much correct then. Thanks!!! I am trying to open a small Publuc Aquarium in Naples, FL. Hence, my questions. Just a prep before I go sit down with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission people.

I just wanted to say here in Montana I just called fish and game and they were like when the fish comes in bring it in and we'll put it in our logs. I ordered from wetspottropical the dude in oregon and got 6 of these bad larrys. So I don't know worth a try, then again were definitely cold water up here and our banned species list is kind of a joke which isn't bad for me :).

Good luck with them. Hope you're one of the few to get them to spawn. If you don't already know, be careful to not get near their fin spines. These cats are venomous and can inflict a very painful sting. Anyone allergic to bees and wasps are at risk of anaphylactic shock if stung.

good advice i had success breeding a group of 6 in a 90 gallon back in 1999 i remember it so well cause i got stung that year cleaning the sand and they had babies and i didnt know then one swam by and whack, just a scrape though bare punctured my hand it would go from numb to burning pain and back for about 2 days, to poor to go to the hospital so i just toughed it out, had a brood of about 25 babies sold them to lfs so this is my second attempt and this time I have arm gloves

If you're unfortunate enough to be stung again there's something you can do to ease the pain immediately. Place the stung area in a basin of water as hot as can be tolerated. The fish's venom is a protein and heat will break down the protein.

i know that now but I didn't have the internet back then that tank was just goin to lfs and coming out with the coolest fish :)

Don't Montana or Idaho have hot springs and already has tilapias, convicts and livevearers thriving in them? I could understand they don't want clarias catfish invade the hot springs...however most northern states don't have hot springs....like Minnesota!
