Hey Guys, finally getting some Piranhas few questions.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yeah, I do agree that sand looks the best, I also really like how easy it is to clean which means less time having my hands in the tank... :) I plan on feeding brine shrimp for a while and then using white fish filets either cut up or dangled with string, and supplementing that with beef heart and other parts, any other suggestions?

I feed mine white and red meat.. Raw of course, never cooked. When they are small brine shrimp and flakes work.. Whatever they dont eat remove though, or you will have problems, and stinky water!

Stinky water is no good, how often do you get one that is a finger chaser? is there any way to negate aggression towards my hands when cleaning / rearranging?

Hey welcome..im also from MA and i;ve been keeping piranha and many species of piranha for many years as well.

You have 55g now right? 3 is a perfect number for piranha to group for RBP. At that size you must feed them 3-4 time a day with small portion of food. Keep the food variety different diet each week you feed them. train them young is good so once they grow up they are not picky at food.

Also piranha dont like bring light so dimmed your light. plenty of woods and hiding space. Keep heavy filteration but leave dead spot for them to rest. Remember the more you feed them the more waist they produce. the more filteration the better.

55g will be good for them in a few months only. pygo tend to grow fast. once they full adult they will slowly grow. Keep in mind that piranha are unpredictable, doesnt matter how well you feed them or how well you maintain they will always fight and end up killing each other some day. the strongest survice.

keep the temp 79-82f for them, but also keep in mind that the higher temp the more active they are. The more active the more they will eat and most important is they will get aggressive with high temp.

diet keep in different every weeks.

young feed them worm, chomp up shrimp, and other small peice.

you can also feed the following food for them.

silver side
clams
market shrimp
scallop
fish fillet
pellet
smelt
worm

hope this help you a little.

Thanks a lot stick that really helped. Yeah I know they are skittish and unpredictable fish but they are really gorgeous and everyone I have spoken with has said they are an absolute joy to keep. What part of mass are you from?

Hey guys quick update for you, I added some more decorations to the P's new tank and will be getting them tomorrow morning. I also set up a 29g for my remaining 2 Cichlids as my girlfriend loves them and wouldn't let me re-home them.

Anyways here you are, any criticisms would be great. First picture is of the new set up for my P's and the second is the smaller tank for my electric blue / yellow lab(s).

forgot to post pics :O hehe, oh I also added a Penguin 400 to my Whisper 60 giving me a combined 700GPH filtration... canister will be added when tank is upgraded.

Awesome, love em both! Both look much better, and the piranha tank looks about right. They will be happy... When are you picking up the little guys?

If all goes well I will have them after my classes in the morning tomorrow. I'm really excited, I hope they live up to their reputation of being awesome to keep. I'm thinking about taking that second driftwood structure out, the one that looks like a ball, I think I'm going to get some mangrove roots and play around with those and put the other in the cichlid tank for them.

Just noticed, but your water level is extremely low. why? Sounds good, it is exciting getting them. :) Well they are fun to keep, they wont eat you!
