hey guys! this is my midas update from 1" long :)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Sure looks like it's starting to show- I've been staring at my Midas since I got him so I can certainly notice a change in him. We're not going to end up with a huge FH water kok with red devils, mi-devils or midas (unless you know where it was collected it's a hybrid)- hell they hybridize in nature. Our fish have heavy Midas genes it's safe to say they'll have very nice sized firm nuchal humps. I think the huge floppy water koks are hideous personally anyways. They look like they would pop like a balloon on obstacles and drain pink crap or something gross. Does anyone know? Can they pop? I wonder about that every time I see one with a bulbous inflamed scrotum looking thing on its head.

There is not a single documented case of A. labiatus and A. citrinellus cross breeding in the wild, and the genetic work that has taken place in CA over the past several years seems to prove that out as well. The two species tend to be found in different geographical parts of the great lakes (Lake Nicaragua & Lake Managua), and even when they cross paths those 2 species of amphs appear to always mate with their own kind.

As far as water koks, you might want to take a look at the midas in the following thread. That male was an F2 A. citrinellus that came from F1 parents from Jeff Rapps.

That is the exact type of midas used to create the old Malaysian line of Ren Mein midas.

Never say never ......

WOW RD! Knowledge overload! That sticky you wrote
  • A. cf. citrinellus - A potential case of F1 Midevils? is certainly going to keep me occupied on my day off. You are definitely the guy to ask....
Seriously, can they pop?

so basically, the kok size is in the genes and not by consuming high quality hump enhancement pellets?
is it possible tht some midas could not form a hump? i have about 5 midas in the pond tht i got for very cheap doesnt seem to be giving out any hump formation.. now they're about 4"-5" long..
and it's weird though having cross breeds of midas and fhs but not a single on a midas and red devil lol

While most of these fish are Hybrids in the broader sense of the definition (A. labiatus x A.citronelus et. al) we generally put them in the CA/SA forum, hence the move from the Flowerhorn section. While both species evolved from a common ansestor and are very closly related they both have evolved to fill seperate ecolocical niches and have not (to the best of my knowledge) interbred in the wild, or they would have not evolved into seperate speces. However having said that without the presences of a suitable mate who knows for sure what happens or has happened over the millenia out there, but I digress.

The individual trates your particular fish has inhereted from it's parents will dictate is genetic predisposition for devloping a nauchal hump (note the word kok is not used in this instance and is reserved for refrencing the exaggerated humps devloped in "flower horns").

If this was going to be moved from the hybrid folder, shouldn't it have least been moved to the media lounge section?

Not necessarly the OP wasn't just showing a picture of his fish, he was also asking about the peeling process and wether or not it was normal. Thank you though for your concern, I put it where I thought it should be.

LOL, no worries Tom. Posting about hybrid cichlid crosses in the hybrid folder is rather common place, I always assumed that's exactly where they belonged.
