Hey, jgentry, LOOK!

My attempt at stripping the fish a couple nights ago was disastrous. I netted the fish, it jumped out of the net and sailed across the top of the tank, almost ending up in my overflow, then I caught it a second time and wrestled it into a container, only to pry its mouth open and find out I'd netted the wrong fish. They switched the fry on me after lights-out. :irked:

I caught the second fish, she jumped out of my hands and ended up on floor, then I managed to get a hold of her, only to have her jump out a second time and flop all over the carpet. When I finally restrained her and opened her mouth, I got a whopping 10 fry. I put her back in the tank and gave up.

Today I came home and found this.

So not only did the pair seem unfazed, but apparently a few minutes out of the water won't hurt the fry, either.

(Sorry about the algae on the glass... I've been skipping my cleanings/water changes since they spawned.)

I think she had them in her mouth the whole time, I just didn't strip them all because of her insane flopping and splashing. Even after I put her back into the tank a few nights ago, she had her mouth tightly clenched with a bulging throat.

In related news, I stripped my male G. parnaibae the same night and he was way easier. I got about 50 - 80 fry from him. Too bad the sevs weren't that easy.

Maybe the "wrong fish" was holding some too?

I had the same experience - these are a lot harder than Geos. because of their size and body shape. Now you just need a siphon :)

I just siphoned them into a 20 gallon. Surprisingly, the parents sat there and let me do it. I left a small herd with them just to see what happens. They patiently waited on me to siphon the fry out, then came in when I finished and picked up what was left. I figured they'd be much more aggressive toward the hose.

JD trained them well

Good decision to leave some. Otherwise the male may beat up the female. Mine did...

My G. parnaibae fry are hopping around a lot in the net breeder today. It looks like they'll be free-swimming in the next day or so. Do you think there's any reason why I couldn't mix the two groups? The severum fry are a bit bigger, but they shouldn't bother other fry, should they?

Awesome Ryan!! I'm glad they are doing so well for you. I warned you about them switching at night:ROFL:.

I have found the best way to get them to release the fry is to grab the one that is holding in your hand with your thumb on top of the fish and your fingers gripping it on the bottom. Then just dip the fish face first into a bucket of water and pull it back out quickly. Do this a couple of times and the fish will release all of the fry. I've gotten at least 400-500 from that pair in one spawn.

I've never had issues with the male beating up the female with those either. They just go right back about there business and spawn again in 3 weeks. I think Peter's male was just ticked because the female did all of the holding.

I would not mix the fry at first. You may be able to later once they are 0.5" or more though.
