...And should 3/4 pipe work for both intake and return??

I am assuming we are talking about your 55g, right? 3/4" will work for the pump return and can be considered an over kill. The pump you will likely end up with will probably have a 1/2" or less return on it. That dictates the required pipe size going back to your tank. Larger is fine and 3/4 will do nicely. However, it is way too small to go to your sump or wet/dry. Since that pipe is gravity fed, as a rule of thumb it should flow four times what the return pipe flows. By doubling the diameter of a pipe, you get four times the flow. In other words, if your pump output is half inch, then you would want a minimum of one inch leading to the sump. If you have excessive fittings or horizontal runs, you will need to increase this size.

Yes the 55. Thanks for all the info. really helps out ro a noob in this hobby to have people that will tell you what works and what doesnt.

keep in mind that you can always put a ball valve on it to reduce flow, and every 45 or 90 angle you put on it lessens head pressure, and if i am not mistaken for the mag drives the head pressure is calculated with 1.5" pipe (i could be wrong on this)

1) messiner is asking a question.

2) a mag 18 on that size tank @ that height is only a 5x turnover.

3) If your talking about radleymiller consider the source (he doesn't always read the whole post :D .

next time please site post #, thanks.
