Hi from germany

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I just had a short holiday.
Spent it taking pictures as much as I could, and found out that I will indeed purchase a 24-70 f2,8 before thinking about a 70-200. Since I'm on a budget the 70-200 will then have to wait a bit. Fortunately I managed to get a set of flashes. A further SB600 would be nice but isn't on my list of nescessities. A remote control however is.

LOL. I knew you will eventually bite the bullet. Good luck ! Let us know how you like it.

How about SB-900 :)

I'm not quite sure what channel the SB900 uses.
Nikon kind of built a bug into their flashes since they use fix channels? At least, I don't know how to change the channel on the Nikon flashes.

The AF assist light on the SB900 is optimized for the 51 sensor D300, D700 and D3 multicam 3500 AF. It doesn't offer any benefits for my current D200 whereas a SB800 fits the 11 sensor setup for my cam perfectly fine.

SB600 all use channel 3 so I could commandeer a number of them with the same setting, either with built in flash or with the SB800. Even though the SB600 does not offer the same bulk performance as an SB800 or SB900 I think they are sufficient for my needs, cheaper, all on the same channel and as I found out last weekend can fire continuously for about 300 shots on a single set of alkaline batteries.

As long as I don't have a D700 I won't purchase an SB900. Still though, as soon as prices for used D700 go down to some EUR 1200 (which will most likely take 2 years, plenty of time to save up for the 24-70 and 70-200) I'll be the proud owner of a D700 ;)

Guess I have a serious case of NAS (Nikon Acquisition Syndrome)

Not sure if I am understanding what you are saying about the channels.

I have several SB-800's and I can switch between 4 channels and 3 groups with each flash unit. It gives a wide variety of options. Would not make sense to not be able to switch channels. In a large group of photographers, one guy clicking off photos would be setting off all the other remote flashes if that is how they were set up.

Welcome to Aquatic Photography! Awsome fish pictures you have.

@ Maddog10, I haven't yet found out how to do this but knowing that it can be done with SB800's is a great help. I already found out how to change channels in the camera, which isn't that hard but I'm still having a hard time setting up my speedlights. I would guess that if the SB800 has this feature the SB900 does as well?

@ Aquaman_95, it's good to hear you like the pictures.
I still have a lot to learn about both fishkeeping as well as aquatic photography. Even though I've been taking pictures for a few years now I only recently switched to digital and only started taking pictures of fish tanks some 8 months ago.

Hallo, sei gegruesst!

Da hast Du aber mal eine schöne Ausruestung ...

Hier wirst Du sicher viele Anregungen finden!
Ich wollte einfach mal wieder auf deutsch schreiben ...

Liebe Grüsse

Uwe

Hi,

You must really think that Germany was a small country...but...yes it is although we have 80 million inhabitants (including the Dutch  ).

So it isn't really a surprise that I know Buddy and I stood beside him when he took the first shot shown above.

I believe that we'll see a lot of nice photos taken by him and I guess most of them will show rainbowfish which is a good idea.

Welcome Buddy !

Bernd

Hallo Uwe,

vielen Dank fuer deinen netten Gruss.

@ Bernd, I'll do my best to provide a slow but steady supply of mainly rainbowfish related pictures which is indeed always a good idea.

Sorry my friend but I think you just missed one of the most important features of Nikon's CLS. Changing channels is very simple. Check your manual for step-by-step.

"Four channel options for wireless operation prevents triggering of other Nikon CLS compatible Speedlights when working in competitive environments."

That is obviously not the only perk of SB-900 so I wouldn't knock it down just because you don't have any of the above bodies ...
