Everything I have read about them say that they are a brackish species too. The owner of my LFS told me though that they are one of a few species that begin their life in brackish/salt water and move to less salty water as they grow older. That is the only time I have ever heard this, and I know this is not typical of fish in general, but according to him that is how this species lives. He said it will be fine in completely fresh water. Has anyone else heard this or have I been misinformed?
Actually some of the largest are caught in full salt but are most common in brackish, they have no sharp spines but many small, very sharp teeth. They do best with at least some salt and will eat filter sludge.

There is a photo of a 27" speciman floating around on the internet. I will try to get the link.
It is absolutly amazing.

This fish is regularly sold here in Brazil as a freshwater fish, but is a huge mustake, it is in fact a brackish one and needs a large amount of salt in water and high pH to live well and even eat. Many times, they're maintained in pH 7,2 or even lesser and without salt and they starve till die. In fact, they go very well with Scat for ex. (they have the same salt necessity, for instance) or other gobies. I never heard about a violet goby eat some fish, only bloodworms, artemia, fine meat and small pellets. In nature, they live better with sand, what they filter putting it in their mouth.
