Hikari Cichlid Gold stained everything!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
honestly, never noticed the water in my tanks, and never hurt anything in my case, but it did tint the white filter pads pink after a while, never stopped me from using it.

this proves that these pellets do stain the water. If your water is reddish...its these pellets. If you don't have this problem then never mind...If you do, just be aware.

ya right, if your water is being stained from these pellets. I would recommend a change in your fish keeping practices. The pellets shouldn't be in the water for more then a couple minutes, let alone 12 hours:screwy:

Heck, I would imagine most any food will polute the water if left to sit for twelve hours.

ive got red sponges as well!

is there a difference between pellets floating in the water for 12 hours and poop from these pellets sitting in the sponges for 12 hours? these still stain. there is no need for test in 75 gallons because I have already seen it with my own eyes in 180 gallons. since i stopped using these pellets, my water is as clear as bottled water. If you are not having problems thats good to know. but if you are having red water. these might be the problem. stop use for a week and you will definitely see a difference. sometimes you get used to what you see. kind of like analog tv and high definition television.

when you drop these pellets in one by one for your fish to finish like I do, there's still flakes of the food that break off and float around. after a while, these flakes will amount to one pellet, then two and so on. this is how the coloring is getting into the water.

it might be that the fish is eatting it and when it poop it red.. so the poop may be the one that make the filter red.. cause when it sucks it up it stay on ur filter for a while right?

I soaked 10 Hikari Cichlid Gold pellets in clean water overnight. Here are the results...do you guys see a reddish tint?
I saw your results yesterday and set up some myself. After doing so, I have to call BS on this one. Mine have been soaking for nearly 20 hrs now and still have nothing that looks like your result. I don't even have all the particles that you seem to have in your test dish indicating you deliberately squashed pellets into the water or used dirty water to start with? The result I got, you would need a ridiculously massive amount of pellets in your water to turn your tank water red. By the time you achieved this, your water would be pretty toxic making your color issue the least of your worries.
I agree with Bderick, if your water is getting colored from these pellets, it is time to re-evaluate the way you are doing things.:)
