Wondering if anyone else has had this problem. I cleaned out my sump pump which was really dirty. When I got it up and running, I now have loud hissing sounds coming from my drilled holes where water goes to my sump. Very annoying and have been trying to fix it for awhile now. I adjust one head, another one will start. My only thought was that my pump is pumping more water at a higher rate now. Any idea?? Attached a video to make it more clear. Thanks guys!

Sounds like air is getting suck down your drain pipes. I get the same noise on my Herbie setup when I have my gate valves all the way open. You can put gate valves or a ball valves on some of the drains going toward the sump but you are going to need an emergency drain just in case. The reason for the valves is to restrict the flow to the sump enough where it stops sucking air. There is a lot of examples if you google Herbie overflow.

Interesting I never heard of that before. Would I attach ball valves to all my lines? And when you say have an emergency line, do u mean one has to stay completely open? I have 4 total lines drilled that fall onto 2 separate chambers of filter pads/pot scrubbies. Obviously I still need all the lines to be taking on water so all my bio material is being used.

I got some questions on your setup. Does all four drains are on top and roughly the same level. If so are you able to attach 90deg elbows on them? Do you have your drains split to two different compartments? What's the gph on your return pump? More pics of your drains and sump will help.

Uploaded a Video to help. I struggle sometimes explaining what I have. The pump is a pond master Mag Drive 950 gph.

Looks like the four drains can handle more water flow and are sucking a lot of air. Great for aeration but bad for your ears:). My suggestion is to add a ball valve or gate valve to two of your drain hoses at the sump. One per wet/dry section of your sump so you will still have constant water flowing thru the media. The other two will be your emergency drains. With the two assigned as your emergency drains where it connects to your main tank, I would adjust it where it's not taking any water in to the sump. So once you have everything installed you have your two main drains doing all the work and the emergency drains not doing anything. Then adjust the main drains valves where you start to restrict the flow of water and the water rises enough in the tank where it barley starts to trickle into the emergency drains. You may have to adjust the height of the main drains a bit where it does not suck air. I hope I made this clear enough for you to understand. I myself need visual references to understand stuff so ill try and see if I can make some up

I think i am following you correctly. My only concern is shutting off 2 of my valves into my sump because only half of my media will be getting hit with water. Thats if I am picturing this right...

The water should still hit both side of you wet/dry. You do have a drip plates installed right? I drew what I was trying to say in my previous post. What size is the pipe and the flexible hose? This should work if the two drains are big enough to handle the gph of your return pump. In the video it did looked like it was possible.

Please excuse the crappy drawing:)

You also have to take in to account that when power is shut off to the pump that there is enough room in the sump. The main tank will drain to the lowest level of the main drains and fill up your sump.

Ok i am starting to understand this setup. So essentially there will be no water coming down the emergency lines? There are drip trays so will the single lines in each compartment still flow over all the media?
