Well just from personal experience, I've had softshells take down fish larger than them. There will always be exceptions to the rule, but softshells are well equipped to hunt fish, and are not the safest bet for a community setup. I wouldn't risk keeping them with anything you cared about.

this is far from true. ive kept a soft shell with several fish and he not once bothered them. a few of my friends have them too with no problems. let me dig up a picture

It's also far from false. ;)

Seeing how fish make up about 90% of their diet it's a big risk you run when keeping them confined to an aquarium with "live food". There are always exceptions of course but in all aspects Soft Shells are some of the worst turtle species to mix with fish. They are very agile and are one of the few species that have no problem swimming down a fishy meal.

There are many better choices out there like Mud and Musk Turtles.

I have no doubt that if not properly fed, and sometimes even if....they will take down a fish or two that are tankmates. I have nothing in my tank and that's what I was talking about when I said I might get another one, but if you have a comm tank...it is a gamble you will most likely loose.

Turtles are opportunists, and don't feel "full" the way we do. I feed my turtles plenty of food each day, but they will still devour anything else as if they have been starved, and can make themselves sick with it. Softshells are very sensitive to overfeeding too, and can have serious problems if fed too much, which is another reason not to house them with fish.

Like VF suggested, Mud and Musk turtles are safer bets if you're wanting to keep species of turtle other than FRT with fish, Softshells are one of the poorer choices.

yeah, there's always exceptions. but to say they can and wil eat/kill any fish in the tank with them is not accurate. my turtle has never bothered any fish, even clown loaches that were much smaller

As I said, it's from experience (which in my case happens to be with the Asian species). Maybe I was a little over the top, but from what I've seen it's more a matter of time than variation between turtle personalities.

I've got a giant mexican musk with fish including a jar, tig, 2 pbass, 4 NTTs, flagtail, and 3 rays.
Everyone has been living together for over a year now.

I've kept this turtle with fish since it was a hatching and she hasn't eaten a live fish her whole life.

I've seen fish bump her right on the face and she would not snap at them.

here are some pics from an older post

thanks for alll the info think i am going for a frt i have two musk in a small terrarium but they will stay there due too the fact when i arrows are big dont want them to get eaten up

FRT are really expensive and there is still no guarantee it will not eat or injure your fish but they are one of the better choices.
