Hey guys,
I've got 2 Emperor 400 and I'm wondering if its possible to convert one into a HOB overflow, it might be a bit far fetched. Could I not just drill a hole into one/both side(s) of the media compartment and have a pipe or hose running down to a sump?
Instead of buying a bit to drill my tank/buying/building an overflow?
I realize it would be cheaper to sell the filter and just buy pvc pipe but for the sake of DIY is this possible?

not a good idea. HOB filters run off of a pump and suction rather than overflow.
even if somehow you were able to match a return pump the the output of the HOB, you will still run into problems with flow rates. something like this is just begging to have your house flooded.

if youre just looking to save money on an overflow, PVC is like $3 for 10'.

in short. no, its not possible.

scratch that. yes, it is "possible", but not a smart idea.

yeah I wanted to drill my tank, but Im just thinking putting a few holes in my new tank just doesn't sound like a plan right now...my next one for sure will be drilled, now just gotta find a sleek pvc design, some of the pvc ones i just dont like, to bulky, i want a slim design

doesn't sound any different that a HOB overflow. I think it could work if you mod it right. No more risky than using any other non-drilled overflow. I say give it a try.

Even if you used the HOB pump to create a siphon, matching that to the sump pump isn't hard as long as the sump pump is larger and you have a control valve. You could just cut the intake so it can only drain an inch of water which the sump should be able to handle. Whether or not to use a powered overflow like that is questionable but intriging.

Just spit balling here - keep an open mind.

I get what your saying, but to match the "HOB powered Overflow" with the larger pump would be a waste. The Emperor is rated at 400gph and am looking for closer to 600-700gph as a minimum, though the emperor pump could be used to prime it like you were saying...I'll have to look into what could be done, not doing this right now so I've got time to research

I doubt you'll get 600-700gph out of the hob intakes anyway. If you did 2 you might. The only reason I like the idea of a powered overflow is for keeping the siphon going. It would be all most like having a closed loop system. I use aqualifters on all of mine to ensure the siphon.

Didn't think about that, your right I don't see getting 6-700 out of the HOB intake....I do have 2 emperors so It could be done...I have always wondered, does 2 600gph overflows equal 1200gph or is it still 600gph in all?
