Thats why I was asking questions before I bought something, I wasnt sure. But for 1.50 it may be worth a try and I can keep my eye on it to see if it works.

if saving money is your main priority, i would suggest selling the marineland filters and getting a single AC110.
when you factor in all the money you will spend in replacement cartridges, the AC pays for itself in just a couple of months, then continues the savings, since it uses a rinseable sponge for the media, and you dont need to buy more media. (you might need a new sponge every 5 years)

otherwise you can get a eheim classic canister. theyre pretty cheap workhorse canisters. it will cost you a little more initially, but it is worth the money if you have it.

Im new to the game so I didnt realize the ac were better. I did look up ac and see where the difference is in your explanation. I was trying to work with what I had. I doubt I will buy anything else. If I cant figure something out I will just let the biowheels run by themself. I just like the fact they are giving me water movement and filtration is a bonus.

I have a fx5, ocean clear 325, power head with filter, 2 marineland 350's, 2 inline heaters and a emperor aquatics uv on a 180. Probably going for 4 pbass and arrowana for stock.

So with the marinelands I just wanted the best way to use the filter without the factory stuff, even though I did say expensive I guess I should have said effective.

But yeah 1.50 sponge for years as opposed to 15-20$ evry month or so I could buy a ac in no time.

I wouldn't only run an FX5. I've had one crap out on me before. It came back to life after a couple of weeks, but still, it would have been bad news if it had been the only filter we'd been running!

Yeah I kind of started a buying frenzy. I coulnt stop. I still look at filters and my wife says what the hell are you doing. I always say its just a 100 dollars lol.

I love buying filters, especially nice-looking ones. If it were up to me, I'd have the Marineland C-530, just because Marineland makes hot-looking filters. I have 3 of their C-360's. They work great. And this one just came out! But I don't need it. At all. So, I'm just trying to figure out where to put that new tank (and it's new canister filter).

This is what I use in my Penguin and Emperor filters,

And then I stuff this blue bonded filter pad in them,

With the Penguin 350,and the Emperors,I use these http://www.aquariumguys.com/mediabasket.html
and stuff them with pillow fluff and and only use one super cartridge on one side and the media baskets with the pillow fluff on the other side.
I gave up on buying the disposable cartridges a long time ago.If I hadn't found the supercartridges, media baskets, and filter pads,I would have gone broke buying Marineland cartridges.I know a lot of people here hate Marineland HOB's,but I have never had a problem with any of the 12 I am using now.I love them. And having found a much cheaper way to use mechanical filtration in them makes them all the better,IMO.

Whoa deja vu.

I figure I have the green light to get stuff for the "new tank" so I might as well get enough so I can do another tank later lol. Then when I find a stellar deal I can tell the wife this wont be much to get running I can use some stuff from the other tank lol

Thanks for the links fishbum
