Anyone one else like to put hob filters on sides of tank instead of on the back????

Sure you can, as long as it fits. It may make it difficult to make a lid fit, but that's something you could work around.

I disagree! Say 2- AC110 on the back of a 6' 135gal it makes more sense to hang on back n to point their flow 18" across the tank or put one on each end to flow down a 6' tank?

The Author of this thread never mentioned a 6' 135 gal. He asked a very simple blanket question which you have avoided giving a simple response to by complicating it with a single situation...

UGLY

Wouldn't that depend on how the tank is arranged?

No need in misdirecting the guy based on assumptions. It will work and it may work better in his particular case than hanging it on the back... Answer the dudes question and see what he says/does next...

I guess but if the tank is reoriented as to one of the short sides being the main viewing point then does not that become the front of the tank?

Example my 12" x 24" x 16" planted shrimp tank. Note the HOB at the back of the tank.

Either way if ya can see the HOB it is UGLY.

Wtf? I am the original poster I was giving a example! If your sitting in FRONT of a six ft tank you can barely even see much around the ends to even see filters on the sides. Lol

Tops are cheaply made anyhow either from thin cheap plastic or breakable glass which my fish have broke both! Plexy is way stronger n cheaper than junk hoods anyhow! I almost always make my own tops!

Yeah I really like the way plexiglass bows, it makes me clean and rotate the lids every month

Now that's just funny... I totally overlooked that detail. Sorry, lol

I can't really argue that. There are ways to hide them, but whatever of them isn't hidden, is ugly. But when going for a 'natural' look, any/all equipment is ugly.

Plexi is much more impact resistent... but it's also much more prone to bending... pick your poison...

Also, lids need to be anchored on opposing ends, whether front & back or left & right. So if the end of the tank is filled with an HOB, that means the lid much rest on the front and back. This will work just fine but denies the typical front opening approach. Of course this is an obstacle one can work around, but is a resultant impact of the side mounted HOB.

Then of course there are flow patterns to consider. But the size of the tank and the decor both have major impacts on those details...
