I don't even try to justify myself anymore. People will always have their opinions....their dumb opinions.

Last night a couple came over to go out for dinner. My girl friend wants to show them the fish room.....
I told her exactly what they would say . Either "fish fry" or "sushi" they Said Sushi.....
Of course I won the bet and she paid up after dinner (wink) I had fun.....

I can totally relate. Some of my friends and family think I'm crazy spending such "large sums" annually on fishes, food for my aquariums and to pay house sitters to feed and do water changes at my houses while I travel abroad for work.

I don't care what they think. I work hard to have what I want and this makes me happy. My aquariums bring me peace and add extra meaning to my life. Their presence has helped me through tough times and even helped me overcome addiction.

This is my church

as I sit here and watch my 180 fill, 4 more tanks to go i am pondering if a hobby. Is having a dog a hobby? rabbits, cats, gerbils, is fish keeping the same as wood working? car restoration? is it about the tank design and the fish just decor? I do know I am not a fish owner, i am a fish keeper. and perhaps that's the dif .

Hello; I like the way you described what we do. I have called it a hobby for over 50 years but will adopt "fish keeper" with your consent.

If someone comes to my house, by the time they leave they have at least a little bit of interest. Setting a kid up with a 29 setup costs me very little and I get a new kid in the hobby. I pick them up off of Craigslist and BOOM, a new kid has a great hobby. I have only had one get returned. I'm old enough now that I am giving them to grandkids of people I know.

Yes!! That too. Fish fry I hear more often than sushi.

And keep those dirty stories out of here! Lol

My wife tells me all the time, " you talk nicer to your fish than the kids" of course my reply is usually " my fish aren't always breaking my b@//s. However she knows what they mean to me and would give them mouth to mouth if she had to. Lol

Good stuff Rodger! IMO that is actually an admirable goal to work toward. I've noticed that mist kids love the fish tanks, its the cynical adults who have lost their sense if winder who don't like or understand our passion. You're probably doing more for those kids than just introducing them to fish! :)

Lol that's a good woman! My wife is the same way... She always complains that the first thing I do when I get home is check in the fish! But she knows how much I enjoy it and how much it means to me so she always supports it and trys to feign interest for my sake. She's a keeper. :)

When I was a little kid my father was a stay at home dad and bred fish in the basement to help pay the bills while my mom worked. He had 17 40gallon breeder tanks among others in the fish room running off a blower on industrial iron stands... plus the 55gal display tank in the kitchen.

So when company comes over and sees 3 display tanks in my small apartment and freak out (before showing them the others downstairs) I just shrug. Whatever.

Its all about perspective.

:edit:

I think alot of it has to do with the fact that most people have tried their hand briefly at fish keeping and failed. They never spent the time or researched how to make tank maintenance easier. They were never committed to maintaining healthy tanks and just assume that fish hobbyists have to go to petsmart on a biweekly basis to replace dead fish like they did. Sure it's "expensive" but after the initial cost is overcome the food and day to day maintenance are pretty affordable for most.
