Well I thought I had an all male tank until today. Apparently one of the fish I ordered online as a male is really a female. The fish wasnt eating and was acting weird all day, then I noticed its mouth looked really full and looked like it was chewing. Well the fish came right up to the glass and I could see the little eggs in her mouth. I am kinda suprised, there are 14 other male fish and this fish has been in there for about 2 weeks (the others have been in for 2 months), but there has been no extra aggression or extra attention towards her or each other. What size tank can a female Ngara Flametail live in by herself? If I get a male flametail can I put a male in their until they breed and then put him back in the main tank? I am thinking about breeding them, no one in my area carries these kind of fish. Pretty much all that can be found here is assorted african cichlids and a bunch of different mbuna species.

You could get them to breed in a 30 gallon tank no problem. It would probably be better if you put the male in the other tank after they spawned then if she spits you don't have to worry about the fry getting eaten.

So put the male back in the main tank after she spawns? Its not too stressful for them to move back and forth? Thats what I want to do. Will she eat the fry if I leave her in there with them?

This first batch I will either feed to the other fish or raise for my own curiosity since the fry will be some sort of hybrid.

I usually just pull the females and strip them around day 16. I always keep the breeders together. In the past when I have separated the females to a 10 gallon "nursery" tank I have never had the females eat any fry. They aren't scared so have no reason to eat them. It wouldn't stress the male out too much to move him back and forth as long as water quality is the same. Won't stress him anymore than females are stressed being forced to spit the fry.

Would it be better for me to get 1 or 2 more females? I think it would just be kinda fun to breed these fish. I can get a 40gal with stand cheap on craigslist. Why is it better to strip them rather than letting them spit on their own?

:Di would try to save a few of these babies since they could be possibly pure.. she could have been holding when you got her ... did you get her from reliable source or mixed african tank...at lfs...curious what the babies would be..:D

I ordered her online (as a him), she has been in the tank for 2 weeks. She didnt appear to be holding at first, and ate like a pig the past 2 weeks. I am fairly certain the fry are going to be hybrids. I have her in a 10gal right now by herself and I am going to raise the fry out of curiosity, but I wont sell them or give them to anyone because they are hybrids.

okay yes if she was eating the past two weeks then it is due to one of your boys...? Be interesting to see how they turn out..and it will give you a lesson on raising fry... for next time..:D

Thats what I was thinking. And I dont really have a problem with hybrids, but I dont believe they should be distributed, they might look cool though and I am fine with keeping them in my own tank.
