Don't know why you're freaking out.

To clarify my entire family are dentists - going back to my Great Grandmother and now my sister.

If you don't feel any pain the root isn't exposed to open air yet so the tooth is just fine - if you've never had a cavity then your track record would indicate it's likely a chipped tooth and not a cavity (they don't just appear overnight).

When is the last time you saw your dentist prior to noticing this? As I said cavity's don't just appear overnight. Believe it or not you can chip teeth on somthing as simple as a plastic straw drinking a soda.

How strong your teeth are is a genetics thing, dependant on the acidity of your saliva amoung other things. Whether you like it or not you may just be pre-disposed to having cavity's with age.

I'd venture to say you either grind your teeth in your sleep or just chipped it on somthing. If it were serious you'd know it (I haven't had any cavity's myself) exposed roots are extremly painful. If it's not sensitive to cold drinks or when you brush your teeth it's nothing to worry about.

A little bit of drilling and some cement will make it look like new :D

I was just running my tongue over my teeth, and felt something sharp. Thought it was food or something, tried to pull it off, didn't work. Looked in a mirror, and flipped out...its a ****ing hole in my tooth! What the hell!!!

I have never had a cavity before, my dentist always said my teeth looked really really good. Any ideas what this is? I am waiting for the dentist to call me back, and I can schedule an appointment.

I am really freaking out though...There is no pain whatsoever at the hole.

It sounds like you fractured off some enamel. If there is no dentin (inner tooth layer) exposed, there will be no sensitivity to sweets, hot or cold.

If you grind your teeth, you can grind clear through the enamel. Dentin is much softer than enamel, so it will wear down and acidic foods can errode the dentin, leaving a hole, or dip in the enamel.

If the tooth is carious, as the caries spreads in the dentin layer, the enamel can become so undermined that it fractures off like a broken egg shell. In this scenario, the caries is advanced. If you've gone in for regular dental exams, and were told you had perfect teeth last year, it is extremely unlikely this is what is causing your "hole".

Man when I was like 18 one of my molars just broke in half when I was eating. I found out the same thing happened to my dad when he was 16. The same molar. the dentist said he sees things like that often in a family. It shocked me and hurt like you wouldn't imagine.

Sometimes perfect teeth will fracture. Just as an ice cube will crack when hit with a spoon, the same thing can happen to a tooth. Tooth enamel and ice are both crystalline structures. If a tooth is hit just right, it can shear off along the enamel rod lines. Those metal balls people wear in their pierced tongues have caused a lot of damage to teeth.....more money for the dentist.

Usually, though, cusps on molars will fracture off because the tooth is weakened from previous caries.

Guys, update: Just got home from work. I had my girlfriend, 4 people at work, mom, and dad look at my tooth. Everyone says I just chipped it....thank god.

And to those telling me too suck it up/grow a pair? This is my phobia...you found it. I can handle pain. I have been through a LOT of pain in my life...2 years ago, I was riding my motorcycle doing about 65, t-boned a deer, wound up in shock trauma for 2 weeks. Was riding the quad with a cast on my left arm, power-shifting since I couldn't use a clutch. I give platelets about once every month. This is a 2-hour process involving a needle in each arm, pulling the blood out, filtering it, and putting it back in your system. I can handle pain. The dentist is purely psychological, and it is my one big "phobia."

In other news, I have an appt. for tmw morning at 9:45. Joy.

I'm fine with bees, surprisingly...I found out I was allergic when I was 7, and ran through a hornets nest chasing after my brother. I ballooned up to a good 2 to 3x my size, My heart stopped, and they pronounced me dead. Kept working on me, got me kicking again. Since then, until I was like 16, I had to get shots of venom/antivenom. I don't remember what it was, I just remember I had to get them weekly in the beginning, then monthly for years...If I remember correctly, it was to build up my immunity to bee venom?

Anyway...lol, looking back at it, I should have died three times in my life, but I managed to pull through each time.

At least you didn't have to get yours ears syringed and your eyelid numbed with 6 needle injections then cut open to have a gland cleaned out of pus, in your eyelid...(me 2 weeks ago)

No biggie going to the dentist either.:)

This'll probably happen to me soon...
I know I'll have a cavity someday, since it's really weird that I don't already. The dentist always yells at me because my teeth are terrible...
