Although I wouldn't normally agree with it, they did what they had to do to protect their cattle. They probably didn't have the technology to catch it without being seriously injured, and by the time somebody could've helped them they probably would've lost all their cattle and the croc could've potentially harmed a member of the family.

Looks obese damn, good news is it probably helped spawn quite a few croc litters, so theirs potential for more like it in the future. I hope.
