Reply from the Aquarium in Amsterdam, RTC specs! Wow, he looked nearly 6 feet ... but just over 5 feet. STILL WAY BIG! I took pix of the big guy, the smaller one was nice too, but too far into the tank to see well (see link below for more pix). Great to have heard back from ARTIS.

Added a few pix to the forum gallery: http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/gallery/showgallery.php/cat/2

Subject: FW: Visited your aquarium, question about the Red Tailed Cat

Dear Sandee,

The biggest one is about 160 cm long (5.25 feet). This one was bought in December 1972, about 30 cm (11.8 inches) big. The second one was bought in august 1973, the origin of the smallest one could not be found so quick.

Good question, since also I was surprised how old this catfish already is! Didn’t know that yet myself.

Thanks to very old notes of former former colleagues.

Best regards,

Eugène Bruins

5' is still the largest I've ever heard of in captivity. Did they say how long it had been in their tank for? That still puts it in the 125-150 lbs class.

Since December 1972! So that would make this guy over 35 years old!

They have actually counted the growth rings inside the pectorial fin spines of individuals that have lived over 50 years.

so for anyone thinking about keeping rtc's, its not just a pet its a life long friend, and some may want to write their cats into their will's now....:nilly:
