I think the volume of water it's going in plays a factor in terms of appearance of tannins. For boiling, the next best thing is flip between halves if you dont have one big enough to completely submerge?

May be able to pick up a big pot at Goodwill - giod to have for this.

These solid wood types like this will leach tannins for quite some time, I think purigen will be your best bet for the removal of tannins after soaking for a while. I have mopane root that still eventually darkens the wood after who knows how long, probably at least a year.

esoxlucius esoxlucius not sure if that's a good idea!
Boo that’s not what I wanted to hear haha

I’ll have to look into purigen, I haven’t even heard of this before.

+2 on the Purigen.

With a piece of wood like that, there's no telling how long it will take to finish leaching, if ever. I'd say to keep doing what you're doing, get it as clean as you'd like, then throw it in.

Thanks! I have never heard of purigen, I actually had to go google it.

Seems like something you would want in your filter regardless of tannins, no?

I use it water polishing and tannin removal. It's a great alternative to running activated carbon and is easily "recharged".

I'e been using it for quite a few years now and have no complaints.

I’m assuming you just bag it up and put it in the filter, how many times can you reuse it?

I've always bought it pre bagged in the 100ml pouches.

I've still got some of the first pouches I ever bought (like at least 4 or 5 years old).
