Home depot/Lowes River Rocks: Are they safe?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I always rinse and soak rinse and soak no matter the source for a few days. Never had any problems with my rocks bringing in unwanted stuff. I recommend a quarry I got 20 prime pieces of lava rock (The owner gave them to me because the bill was less than 20 bucks) which I drilled and sanded and each one looks like the 10$ ones on the shelf at the LFS

I agree with the last post , rinse and soak regardless of source . better be safe than sorry . I always go to home depot and such for many of my tank materials and have had no problems . only wished they carried slate.

depending upon the manager, and how much you are willing to buy, they can special order certain building materials.

Thats the only gravel that I use and I have never had a problem. GL

I've never had any problems using their river rock. There's an added bonus; if the river rock they have in comes from Oregon, I've found some high-grade apple-green jade pieces, petrified woods, and several nice agate/jasper pieces.

I may try that .

agree with the guys who say to go to a landscaping/rock yard. I got large river rock for my africans-got 200 lbs and paid 26 bucks. cant beat that.

I've used large river rocks from Home Depots before and had no problems. Be sure you rinse it with well because they're very dirty. It wouldn't hurt bath it in hot boiling water. Check out the labels on the package to make sure it's safe for the enviroment. If it's safe for the environment then it's safe for your fish considering you clean it. If you're buying large amount then I suggest you talk to Julian. He knows a place locally that sell landscaping rocks.
