South. Were just west of tacoma (I always tell people from other states were near gig harbor, which is near tacoma, which is near seattle).
Thats why you add a little salt mix.Kevin8888;3823409; said:Firstly, I like the idea, but its not going to work for a reef setup, for a few reasons. Firstly there is a lot more in the water then those elements, infact like 20ish or more that arent included there including iodine for starters. Secondly and most importantly, only 2 of those sources are even remotely pure and a 2 more that mite be reasonably pure, I'm a chem major and I have to say that only one of those is food/pharmasutical grade.
That being the bakingsoda, th epsoms salts and water softener are not pure they will have contaminates (minimal due to their useage but they are there) the strontium we will assume is pure as its for reef systems.
But I cannot stress enough is that Ice melter salt not even remotely pure they dig it up and throw it in bags basicaly there could be anything in it, pipesafe I would be astounded if it was pure but I suppose its possible, but the road salts, are not and will never be clean they are not even close to pharmasutical grade. But at the same time if its for a FO or a FOWL then you would probably be ok, as theoreticaly all the trace elements the fish need are in their food.
First of all iodine is present in water softener salt unless you buy it without, (iodine free on the label) second is water softener salt ( sodium chloride) can be 99.8% pure and I doubt you need more than that for any fish, but like you said corals do, but thats not my need. My daughter uses this in her tank with inverts and we dont see any problems so far but time will tell. I dont know about the other chemicals such as Mag. chloride, mag. sulfate or the potassium chloride are they dug up out of the ground just like that? They are not formulated? There is one guy around that has been using this for his 16,000 gallon shark tank for a while, maybe he will chime in. I am wondering if you have read "Chemical Oceanography" by Frank Millero where this recipe came from? Maybe it says not for corals, I could'nt tell you that but I will find out with my daughters tank if she's up to it.Kevin8888;3823409; said:Firstly, I like the idea, but its not going to work for a reef setup, for a few reasons.
