Hoplarchus psittacus - new center piece

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
mine'll chase pretty much every fish with the same body shape, severums, uaru, datnoid, even the flagtail and jurupari. nothing serious happens just a bit of chasing across the tank.

they have the potential of being quite aggressive. alex, cartersvillealex who peter got his pair from, had one that couldn't be kept with anything else. it was alone in a 75g, when i came close to the tank it tried to attack like some big CAs

They do have a reputation of being somewhat aggressive, so I guess it really depends on individual fish. My severums often swim up to them and nudge them a little bit, and nothing happens.

Did you keep the biggest and most active one out of your group?

yeah i kept the biggest. they were all very active and played nicely. i would like to get one back that i sold to jamie but im sure it'd be hell in my tank then lol. he was about 6" when i sold them to JD at the spring auction, next being about 5", and is now a good 10". im assuming its a male. he has been chasing the female rotkeil and him the male gold get along pretty well, better than the male rotkeil. i've got some new pics im uploading and will be up this afternoon :D

I don't normally do this but I see you still post here so I'm gonna necro this thread. How are these guys doing? They have become my new favorite cichlid as of late and I always wonder how hard it would be to get my hands on some that display that level of blue coloration.

Not well. I moved them into a glass 300g, which busted on my me one morning. I had to give them to a friend, who kept them in a divided 125. One day the male knocked down the divider and killed the female, and died a few weeks later.

That was probably about 6 years ago. Very sad. Switched to acrylic since then.

Very sorry to hear that. Just out of curiosity where did you source them? On a side note hearing your story reinforces my decision to go acrylic on a tank I recently set up.
