Hoplias from Choco ID please

Sweet Jeff.... Robert or me will give you a call sometime this week to set this up.

The intermedius was exported from Columbia but we need to be careful when we talk about fish from Columbia and Venezuela. The issue being that it is illegal to export lots of fish from Brazil and Venezuela. Columbia borders Venezuela, Brazil and a couple of other countries, can't remember off the top of my head. This allows exporters to travel between these countries to export them from a country where it is not illegal. This is how we are still able to get L46's as they exist midway down the Rio Xingu.

The intermedius would only of come from brazil and exported from Columbia. I have in the passed tried to get exact capture location but have found it very difficult to get any sort of answers.

The underjaw shot posted does look lac. we need to be able to count the pores.

Are you sure its not the Eleotris picta ?

They do look like wolffish...

This was covered on another forum so here goes. It's a Wolf. Look at the fins, Dorsal and Ventrally. Wolf has a single dorsal and no Adipose fin. The wolf has the paired ventrals much further back and the Gobies are much further forward practically under the pectorials. They do look very alike though.

I love this type of thread. The underjaw shot unless I am mistaken does show lacerdae type jaw. picture could be a bit clearer to see for sure. This has now got me doubting the I'D of my intermedius. I went with intermedius as it was the closest match to the fish I had and we couldn't guarentee the capture location.

That's why I was hoping you'd jump in at some point today ;)

Lac jaw but i'd say the skull structure was wrong for a lac. Was looking at Microlepis trying to get some more details on them given these guys apparent similarities to Malabaricus and Lacerdaes. cant seem to find anything more on them though as most Microlepis in the trade seem to have been mis-identified (from what i can tell..!).

The lacedae group jaw structure varies greatly. curupira has a very broad blunt head when compared to the normal lacerdae. I would say my 'intermedius' was some were inbetween. From what I have seen of microlepis the jaw is somewhere in between as well.

The best example I have found. This picture was posted by lil neet on another forum. microlepis and malabaricus are very similar.

From what I have seen I don't think the wolf we are talking about is a microlepis. Will be good to see some pictures of the fish imported.

OK Hops are here. I took some pics late last night (below).
There are several 6-7" fish and one 12" individual.

Here's one of the underjaw pics as requested. Luckily, I still have all 10 fingers!

Sadly a few Hops were packed 2 in a bag. I guess shipper didn't take my Cichlids 101 course where it's taught that two aggressive fish in one bag usually = one alive, one not so much.

Here are post mortem pics taken this morning. This fish was barely alive last night, so I just let him alone in a 30 gal tank overnight. It gave itself up for scientific study by this morning.

A few of the readers asked about these fish. I'd like to identify them if possible before marketing them. Hopefully these photos will be of help. Remember, these fish are from the Pacific slope of Colombia (not from the Amazon drainage basin).

Thanks for taking the time to look into this Hoplias mystery.

really nice colouration on that live one.

Still umming and ahhing about the exact I'd though. Kinda swinging towards Micro but I'm guessing. Still don't think Malabaricus though. Maybe worth PMing Braveheartcalif as he's something of a Wolf wizz!
