There are two Blacks going around at the moment. There are probable more to come.

The Xingu black which is one undiscribed species that was originally found in the Rio Xingu. This is a smaller Hoplias species, it has been in line to be discribed for a little while now.

The Hoplias Sp. Black is a larger wolf, Has been caught in Venezuala and over a broader range. This wolf is reported to reach 28". This is the wolf at the start of the thread.

Thanks

i always thought sp. black referred to all black wolves as a whole.

There is no official rule on this. We could refer to them as 'Hoplias Sp. slightly darker brown than the common' if we wanted to. Sp. black can be used to refer to all black wolves. Most of the time they are traid names to sell the fish.

Yes the Larger is the sp. Venezuala.

So how big does the one Rich is selling get? How fast do they grow?

They don't grow that fast really. once they hit 11" 12" they really slow down.

i bought 1 from rich at 16" last year and it has only grew an inch, but it was a finakey eater but he eat much more now .

So does anyone know their max size? I guess they grow slow. How easy are they to get off of live food? I have an eight incher coming in.

i am not an wolf expert, but i have never heard bigger than 17" in US. if i remember correctly the biggest ons is around 19" ( either david or seichi in japan)
i read a thread from expert in japan, he said some black wolf strain can reach over 3 feet, but we do not know what kind of black wolf stain came to US. i think there are many different black wolf strains in SA, not just two.
as i said above, i am not an wolf expert so i could be wrong, but this is what i got the info from other experts
email to eric (braveheardcali). he still talks to people in brazil who published taxnomy of aimara.
