i am not an wolf expert, but i have never heard bigger than 17" in US. if i remember correctly the biggest ons is around 19" ( either david or seichi in japan)
i read a thread from expert in japan, he said some black wolf strain can reach over 3 feet, but we do not know what kind of black wolf stain came to US. i think there are many different black wolf strains in SA, not just two.
as i said above, i am not an wolf expert so i could be wrong, but this is what i got the info from other experts
email to eric (braveheardcali). he still talks to people in brazil who published taxnomy of aimara.

im sure either seichi or david had a black wolf over 20".
there must be more than 2 variants in south america.
thats for sure.

I think David's wolves over 20" are the Lacerdae's and Aimara. They may have the Ven. Black at that size though. I don't think there are any other Hoplias that reach much above 15" an captivity. Hopefully David could confirm this.

I would say all the Black wolves available tend to be one of two we are talking about. These are clearly different species rather than varients. I have no doubt there are different variations in colour because of there range. There are a lot of different photo's out there showing variations in colour. My single Black wolf has shown most of these colours depending on mood, very variable.

To the original question I have some new info. Yesterday I tried to combine my Xingu and a Cephalosilurus Fowleri cat which is far from a push over, the Wolf went ballistic, continous full on aggresion, The cat hid but as soon as the wolf saw him again he attacked, I have seperated them now. The Wolf has his own tank now.

ive seen bigger than 16".
as for you saying the ven blacks and xingu blacks are a totally different species,i think you may be right.
not much is known about these...
