Also all those plants that Petsmart has in those tubes that say they are for aquariums will work well to absorb nitrates. I believe they are made by Topfin if im not mistaken. These are aquatic plants that are "house plants" but sold as aquarium plants, but die full submerged. They have Gold Ribbon plants and I cant be sure of the rest, but mine has a decent selection.

I was at my mothers a few weeks ago and she has many hanging plants. I got a spider plant and a potho branch from her, A few leaves and a few roots long and the roots just hang down into the water and the plants are doing great. It actually seems to cut down on the algae growth, But cant be sure how they will effect nitrates this early because they are young still.

You sure they are all house plants? I see them ALL the time, always looked at them because I never recognized them as aquatic plants.

I dont really know what to call them. Most are terrestrial plants or "bog plants". Ive seen some anubias that are fully aquatic I believe but thats about all in those tubes.
Certainly do a bit of research before you rely on the plant surviving with only the roots submerged. The main clue is that the plants are surviving in a tube like terrarium which most fully aquatic plants wont be able to do. You can read countless stories on forums about people buying these plants only to have them as temporary plants fully submerged because they rot away. Petsmart is infamous for snails attached to plants in their fully aquatic plants they keep in the tanks, so steer clean of those.
*Side note- Its probably better to avoid Petsmart for plants all together and go to a local greenhouse or greenery and getting one of the plants mentioned. That way they will be much healthier, Cheaper, bigger, and for sure contain no snails. Just be sure to wash the roots really well to avoid any fertalizers or pesticides getting into the tank.
