Yesterday I started a new project. I've had a large tank just sitting and consuming electricity for a couple months now. I decide yesterday after extensive reading and discussion with those far more advanced in the hobby than I, that I'd fill it with Brandtii in hopes of learning more about this fish. As most of you know, the ''experts'' claim there's no way to do it. I spoke extensively to a guy that's had 5 fish together for about 3 years now.

Actually, very little is known about this species, much less it's possible cohabitation or breeding. I started a blog and will update it so far.

They"ve been together almost 14 hours now and the only problem yet is a nipped anal fin on one which is similar to the way Pygos nip.

Good luck. I'm not sure if it's been tried before, but you could check the site piranhafury and ask.
Being they're pygos you definitely have a better chance of it working than if you were using serras.

brandtii is serra

ohio, did you speak to they guy that posted those cohab videos on piranha-cove??

No, I've yet to be able to get in touch with him. I've spoke to a few people like him and have had success. This is really nothing new. Keepers have tried this sort of thing since the 60's so I'm not trying anything new here.

I'm the kind of guy that if everyone says it's ''impossible'', I'm going to do my best to prove them wrong.

in that case regardless how your brandtii cohab goes you should also have an other tank going for the "Pygo Piraya Breeding Project"

Lol. It's not so much of a breeding project...yet! First they have to refrain from killing each other. I'm hoping to buy my own house within a year. At that point I plan on building something truly big and maybe even a couple indoor ponds.
With all the advances in the hobby I see most species eventually being bred. It's happening now with a lot of Serrasalmus species, it's just not heard of.

Piraya would be awesome to breed!

Without mattering the consecuences regarding your pets well being?... doesnt sound too nice dude...:irked:

Is it has been said quite a lot that serras aint a spicies to shoal, there must be a cetrain reason for so many serious people claiming that fact dont you think so?.

However there is a guy here in Mexico who sells Serrasalmus branditt and he says it is possible to shoal them with the condition they are shoaled since babies.....but who knows?.... i wouldnt be too happy if while trying to do this my fish ended up in a carnage..

I happen to work at home so will be almost constantly monitoring these fish. If I were to have to leave the house for 8-14 hours a day I'd never even consider trying it. Trust me. I have nothing but the best intentions for both my fish and the hobby as a whole. Back in the 1600's there was a fella by the name of Columbus. The world told him the Earth was flat. If it not been for his interest and perseverance to know for himself, they might still be drawing flat maps of the world.

If you ask around you'll find a varied opinion of every species of fish and most anything else so the notion that ''they'' say it can't be done doesn't phase me. In fact, I've spoke to numerous people that have not only kept Serrasalmus species but have actually bred them in captivity and am finding more and more stories of success. If you've not yet noticed, there is virtually no factual information on Brandtii. It's my belief most self-proclaimed ''experts'' no little to nothing and simply jump on the bandwagon of urban legends and naysayers with absolutely zero knowledge of what they're saying.
As I've said, people have experimented since the 60's with these types of projects. Many have been successful yet you don't hear those stories.

As far as a Piraya breeding project, it's the last thing on my mind right now. If I were to undertake such project I'd want a 600- 1,000 gallon tank.

Yeah, the info about S. Brandtii is unexistent so you might be one of the first to come up with something..

Lets take your shoaling projet as a research project....:)
