How active is your gar?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
My Gator Gar has gotten pretty active as of late, so active in fact that he has jumped and busted thru my glass tops twice (ive since replaced them with acrylic tops). this is his third jump and has racked up a cumulitive total of a dozen or so hours out of water.

thats what i am wandering! i dont use the glass tops provided w/ most tanks. its all acrylic for me!

do anyone elses gar swim into the glass and then just keep swimming into the glass like they are going somewhere? or is mine just retarded?

I wonder if he even got cut?

My gar gets fed using feeding thongs. So they attack that with abandon during feeding time. So yeah , theyre pretty active. :)

If hes big enough not to be eaten it should be OK, but it all depends on the attitude of both fish. my gars are fairly unaggressive, but every once in awhile they would attack my other fish, even if they were too big for him to eat. On the other hand, RCK and CK too can be bullies especially if they are larger than the gar. they may lack the gars teeth, but may still stress out the gar if the gar is smaller. good luck w/ whatever you decide to do.

He had one noticeable cut, but most of the damage was from being out of water, the tips of his fins turned red and his eyes a little cloudy. he spent some time at the bottom of the tank on his side, but later on that day he was swimming around. the very next day he was eating again.

Yea lessoned learned on that one, i had overlapping pcs of glass ranging from 1/4" to 1/8" (the tank had no top when i got it) also had it weighted down with filled bags of water.

On a lighter note, the same gar used to give ferry rides to crickets i would put in for my GG...lol.. really wish i had a camera ready for that one.
