How are you ready for a power outage

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I've been procrastinating on purchasing a generator for my tank, but for now I just run a extension cord from my truck to my filter and it sucks. I've toyed around the idea of purchasing a battery back up that is used for computers, but I'm on the fence with that one...........

Battery backups work, but only for short amounts of time. Azoo makes emergency air pumps that seem to work pretty well. These and doing small water changes during the outage could help you get through it.

Im going to have to check it out but i have a really nice generator that the guy who sold it to us ( a close friend we see a lot) said it powered his and his neighbours kitchens and living rooms so all my tanks + cable are set haha. Wouldnt care about TV as long as i can watch my fish

I have been using a portable 5500 watt generator for years that is a lifesaver. Runs 3 tanks, fridge sump pumps pellet stove tv some lights. But power outage seem to be getting worse over the paste couple years so I have a Generac 11kw whole home system sitting in my garage waiting for my permit applications from the town so I can install. It was expensive and runs on propane since I have no natural gas but $600 in propane to run for 2 weeks is much better than losing thousands of dollars in fish some that are non replaceable.

Power recently came back on after being out for nearly 7 hours in a planned outage that went longer than projected. At 1 am I was connecting extension cords for the equipment room and the refrigerator (because I forgot the power was going to be out). It was a very minor inconvenience to keep the fish warm and safe. Looking forward to when the fish are in their new home where we won't have to do anything when the power goes out.

Still haven't taken the pumps/refrigerator off the extension cords. Old equipment room on the left, refrig. cord in the foreground, pipes and foam sections for the background for the new tank also cluttering the floor. Guess I better go disconnect the extension cords.

This is something on my mine often, but I keep procrastinating..........guess I'll have to learn the hard way when the POOP hits the fan.

Unfortunately, the generator I purchased is too small to power the whole house. The electrical man marked every outlet and switch that is connected to the generator.

I guess we should use extension cords to the equipment room and kitchen when we are going out of town--just to be safe. I hadn't thought to do that, but if we are away and an outage occurs, our fish will be in trouble.

I've got backup batteries (UPS) that run my filters for a couple of hours, and then a 5000 W Subaru generator and 20 gal gasoline in the shed. I say bring it on. I made it thru Irene and Sandy without losing a single fish

Bought a 7500 Watt generator about 6 years ago with a 10 circuit transfer switch. The transfer switch I hooked up myself (Fairly easy, not a electrician). It allows you to safely connect the generator to certain fuse boxes to your household wiring so you don't need to use electrical cords from the generator. All I do is plug in the generator to the transfer switch and it runs almost everything except my air conditioner. I have only needed to use it a couple times with 4 hours max but at least it is peace of mind.
