How are you ready for a power outage

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I've got backup batteries (UPS) that run my filters for a couple of hours, and then a 5000 W Subaru generator and 20 gal gasoline in the shed. I say bring it on. I made it thru Irene and Sandy without losing a single fish

Congratulations to you and your fish for being survivors!

My days of running extension cords around the house and waking up in the middle of the night to fill up generator are finally over. 11kw. Generac w/ 200 amp transfer switch It will run most of the house as long as my wife is not baking and has all the heat cranked up in the winter.

generators do come in hand with power outages also portable aerators could help too I have a friend in ky that has a generator for his herps he has a high end collection of mostly carpets. I was always bad about not being prepared too I did have a power outage with some gar once a storm came through but the power was not out very long and they survived. I imagine it would be harder with something like sharks or rays though since they don't gulp air like the air breathers.

when I had my first big power outage it was during the october storm in MA and didnt have power for a week. For the first half of the week i used mirrors to guide the sun to my tanks and keep them lit and heated mildly. To help with the oxygen and such every hour i would drain some water from the tank and add cupfuls of water to keep the water clean and oxygenated. The other half of the week we Found a generator for cheap and used that to keep everything alive.
