How bad are tiger barbs in shoals?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I had about 15 of them. I had parrot fish and an oscar in with them. This was a long time ago, when I first started out.

I keep about a dozen at at any time in my 125 with some africans.
They are active and a fun little fish. Every couple months I restock and add two or three to get back to the 12.
They do tend to beat up on one another at times.
Good Luck

Interesting. I guess they're like any other fish, your mileage may vary. I've seen ONE occasion where a barb nipped at my larger bichir (6") but I've never seen a repeat event. Sometimes my convicts will get in their shoal and chase them around, seems like a game to them.

When my shoal had only been in the tank for a week or two I did a large WC and two of them died that day/night. Not sure if it was due to the WC, stress, or getting pecked to death. Thats why I now have to green barbs. Since then they've all been survivors. I even saw a bit of a mating dance between one of the greens & one of the regular tigers. With my stock though there's no way eggs would make it, and especially not fry. Oh well:p

So, GSM? Have you made a decission on what you are going to do with the possibility of a shoal of Tiger Barbs' or not? Kind'a get the feeling your leaving us hangin' here about your thoughts.

I keep mine with 7 odessa barbs, 7 polka dot loaches, 6 c121 cory cats, and a BN pleco. Shoal of 9. No problems at all.

They are awesome little fish. Great big attitude in a small package.

Here they are... obviously they are "green" tiger barbs. This was taken with a phone camera, their colors are much more vibrant in person. :naughty:

Here is a preview of the tank build I'm doing for them... high tech co2 33 gallon planted... plants are growing in and I'm still waiting on a large order I made for quite a few other species of plants (oh, and my busted quad t5ho fixture, it's running a 30" dual t5 at the moment) so I haven't posted anything about it, but here it is:
