how bad is this???

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
the ph out my tap is 6.7. my tank is always at 6.7. I think it was the temp and maybe the gasses that made that happen. they looked fine within about 2 hours so im guessing no harm done

The main thing you need to be concerned with is the fact that all the chemicals they put in your drinking water to make it safe for us to drink with kill off the Bio matter in your filters as soon as it hits it.. It is made and added to the water to do just that!!! With a 25% to 50% W.C. you can get away with it because the water remaining in your tank will dilute the chemicals enough that they will not have that effect on your filters or Bio matter.. That is why you have to use your old fish tank water to clean the sponges in your filter and not tap water, the tap water will kill any Bio matter on the sponge and your tank will have to go through the whole cycle stage again!!! So I would have to say you are a very lucky man if your fish are still alive.. Between the 100% WC or the 10 degree difference in temps would kill almost any fish so with the 2 of them together you should thank God for that tonight when you go to bed...LOL.. If you feel the need to do a 100% W.C. do not turn your filters back on for atleast 24 hours, just some good bubbles in the tank will move the water around good to help the gases escape the water... Good luck brother I hope they all make it through the new cycle now...

Isnt it bad to do 100% WC?? When is a large WC recommended i always just do 25-30% ..

Yes IMO in is very bad to do a 100% W.C.... for the reasons I already explained, However if your water quality is that bad you can do a 50% to 70% W.C. today and do another one tomorrow, But you should never do it all at once.. And the only time you really need to do a large W.C. is if your water quality is really bad and needs to be fixed right away.. I have 14 tanks up and running right now and on most of them I only do a 50% once a week, For my Peacock bass and EBJD's I do (2) 50% W.C. a week... I used to do a 50% every other day for them but they are a little bigger now and should survive now with good water quality.. The main thing is use a lot bigger filter then you actually need.. I have a fluval fx5 and a fluval 405 on a 125 gallon.. I have a fx5 on a 80 gallon for my EBJD's, I have 4 fx5's on my 240 gallon.. Always use more then you need and it helps a lot, and always use 2 filters and 2 heaters on all your tanks in case 1 of them fail you still have the other to keep your fish alive..

I agree, assuming pH, chlorine, etc. good, it's either one or the other or some combination of the two. What was effectively an instant ten, eleven degree temperature change in itself is enough to account for what you saw imo, because even after getting over the initial temperature shock, it likely took a while for their bodily stress reaction chemistry to return to normal.

As for large water changes, not necessarily as bad as some think, as others who regularly do large water changes can tell you. It depends on quality and consistency of your new water vs. tank water. Meaning in some cases it can cause problems, but it's not a rule. I've done a lot of 70-80% water changes with no problem at all-- in fact on one, actually, make that two, SA tanks my normal weekly water change is 70%, nothing wrong with the tank, filtration, or water quality, just my routine for that particular tank. And on a couple of occasions I've done a 100% water change when something accidentally got in my tank, and I had no problems (like the time I bought some epsom salt and didn't realize it was perfumed until I started adding it to my water).

Exactly.

For those non-believers, check out how they perform 100% water changes at Lucky Tropical Fish Farm. (via water supplied from large storage tanks outside)

Yep and if you look on that video on you tube you will see I commented on that and I will comment on it here as well... That is just wrong and stupid as hell!!!! Don't get me wrong I know they are professionals and that is what they do for a living, But that is wrong how they do that... Watch how hard that water beats against those fish, That is just WRONG!!! Would you take one of your fish out of your tank and spray it with a hard blast of water like that??? No nobody would do that it is wrong and cruel for the fish.... I understand why they do it and that is the best water they put back in there but they should change it to a spray instead on that hard stream of water like that.... And if you read up on that place they use fresh stream water from where the fish live in the wild, Most of us don't have stuff like that to use in our tanks in the U.S.
