Hope they don't treat your water with chloramine, because letting it run for a day or 2 will do no good. If I remember correctly chloramine doesn't gas off like chlorine. I feel so bad for your fish...

As previously explained, my local tap water contains chloramine. Unlike chlorine, chloramine does not simply gas off with agitation as chlorine will.


Kids, please don't try this at home. You will cause your fish serious harm, and/or death. Chloramine does not simply "escape by its self" as stated by the Cowboy.

I'm surprised people are even giving him the time of day TBH, I guess everyone loves a good internet argument. Anyone who suggests not adding dechlorinator to treated city water under the misguided belief that they chlorine will magically disappear with a bit of aeration doesn't know what they're talking about. Chloramines are formed when chlorine is added do water with certain organic compounds in it, so unless your city has a reservoir of distilled water there is going to be a certain level of chloramine present, and although the effects of low doses may not be immediately obvious, doesn't mean it isn't harming your fish.

From someone who worked in the water treatment industry and is very knowledgeable on the subject;
When you add chlorine to water you get hypochlorous acid which reacts with the amines (in all proteins) and forms monochloramine. When you add more chlorine you get dichloramine and even more you get trichloramine. All these (and other reactions) form part of the "chlorine demand" in the water. You cannot get free available chlorine until this "chlorine demand" is satisfied. Therefore when the reaction is pushed towards trichloramine there will be virtually no monochloramine present.
When people complain that the chlorine in a swimming pool is too strong and it is burning their eyes the problem usually is that the free available chlorine has been used up by contaminants in the water (such as urea) and this has pushed the chloramines back towards the monochloramine and this is what is burning their eyes. The problem is fixed by adding more chlorine.
When you allow water to stand or aerate it to get rid of the chlorine the chloramines all move back to monochloramine and this will react with your fish the same as an under chlorinated swimming pool will with your eyes.

I was shocked to hear that.
Learn something new almost every millenium, or so..
 
OK this is the last time I will comment on this post but I just think it is so funny how all these know it all's have came on here and hijacked this mans thread to talk about nothing.. The man asked for help and I did not see not one of you know it all's comment or help him at all, But then when I come on here and try to help the guy now you all want to chime in and confused the guy even more!!!! What I have done for over 40 years works great for me and every other real fish keeper I know, Since you must do it another way you have no idea if this way works or not but yet you will still get on here and try to talk me down... I have fish older then most of you kids but you want to tell me something, And that is fine it just goes in one ear and out the other because over the years that is the most important thing I have learned, "What works for me may not work for you, What works for you may not work for me, You have to find what works best for you and do it that way"!!! That does not mean I am doing it wrong and it does not mean you are doing it wrong, All it means is we have different set ups, different fish, different condition or different water conditions... I have never found a fresh water fish I can not keep and breed so I must be doing something right!!!! I just think it is so funny how none of you would help the guy out when he was asking for it but if you think you can talk someone down and hijack a thread you are real fast to do that... I thought this site was a bunch of good fish people here to help each other out not for a bunch of 15 year olds to get on here and talk stupid to others and tell them they don't know what they are doing or talking about!!!!!!!!! I have not had a fish die in my tanks in over 15 years (other then feeders), don't you wish you could say that????? Have fun now little boys I am all done now!!!
