how big do discus need to be, before adding sand to the tank? I had some gravel in there but i'm taking it out(read other thread) and doing bare bottom. how big do the discus need to be before I can add sand?

im guessing by you adding gravel youd be planting as well?? anyways, this really depends on you. its better to do this though when your discus reaches semi adult to adult sizes(about 8months to a year?)..thats about 5-6 inches though some discus grow bigger

thanks my discus need to get bigger, mine are 3.5-4.0 at the biggest.

You can have sand anytime you want. The thing is, you must keep it clean to prevent small discus from stunting. It can be easier said than done. This is why it's recommended to grow your fish out to adult size before you use them in show type tanks.

thanks billy, also how would I price some discus if I wanted to sell a few.
should I go by size, or strain, or size and strain? oh also how long do discus live for, before they get to old and die, do to old age?

Size, strain, and shape. Shape goes a long way in determining a desirable discus, and one you could not give away. They are really no set prices in the discus trade. It's basically whatever one is willing to pay. I've seen ads for large fish offered for sale from show winners in Malaysia for $500 each! I would never pay that much for a fish even if I could afford it. Discus can live for years and years with good care. I'm not really sure how long they can live, but I have a couple that I've had for 5 plus years, including the old Turq. that's in my avatar. That fish is probably at least 6 years old. I usually trade fish away long before they die of old age because I have limited space.

cool thanks, so I guess I should look at what breeders are selling them for, and compare mine to there and come up with a reasonable price. thanks.

someone was telling me I could use pool filter sand, is that true?

Pool filter sand is the only type of substrate I use. It's always cleaner than other types of substrate, heavy enough not to float grains of it in the tank, has a pleasing and natural color, cheap, and comes in 50 pound bags. The perfect substrate in my book! :)
