Pool filter sand is the only type of substrate I use. It's always cleaner than other types of substrate, heavy enough not to float grains of it in the tank, has a pleasing and natural color, cheap, and comes in 50 pound bags. The perfect substrate in my book! :)

sweet, where could I buy some at? any pool places or ace hardwood store?

I buy it at the local swimming pool supply store for about $7.50 per 50 lb. bag. Your mileage may vary...:grinyes:

I'll let you in on my secret for washing the dust off of it, if you don't tell anyone. This is because I enjoy laughing at people who post about washing sand a little at a time with a 5 gal. bucket and a water hose for hours. :grinno: Just kidding. What I do is dump a bag of sand in the tank, add water, and stir. Yep, right in the tank. Pump or siphon the water out, repeat. That's usually all it takes to clean out the most of the dust from it. Sure beats the bucket method. After you get all your sand in there, run your filters overnight. In a day or so, the sand will settle, and the water will be crystal clear and free of dust without all that work. If you're in a hurry, you can put your fish in right away, they don't mind a little cloudy water, only people do. :D

cool cool thanks once again billy.

is pavestone filter sand ok to use. I saw it at home depot 50lbs for 5.49 I think it's white though. I want a beige color. is sand blasting sand ok to use?

I don't know. I've never used either. It would probably be much dirtier than pool filter sand, since it's not made to be a filter media.

your wise billy, I'll go look at pool supply stores then. um another question
what about 3m quartz in a light light brown would that work?

ok, now I'm confused because I was talking to a guy who has german discus at his pet store in the white rock lake area of texas, and he said the carbon doesn't hurt the fish or anything and that I should of just netted it out, and that I shouldn't use pool filter stand because it is stager, and that I should of left the gravel in there.

SO, I did all that for nothing, what should I do?
