how big do discus need to be before adding sand

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
You should have asked him what he had been smoking. Experienced discus keepers never use carbon, or gravel. :screwy:

I won't use carbon but why not gravel. I'v had discus on gravel for years and only had issues when my maintenance laxed.

It's just a maintenance issue. Gravel has to be thoroughly vacuumed regularly to keep it clean because it traps food particles and waste. If you have a lot of tanks to care for, sand or bare bottom is much easier.

Hi there... I'm sure there is an Ace hardware somewhere near you.. They have the pool filter sand as well as pool places. As far as I know they only carry one kind at Ace and that is what I've always used.. I still wash it with the buckets and hose but it doesn't take long as its fairly clean to begin with,, It's cheap, looks good and natural, is easy to clean and the fish love it.. HTH Sue:D
