How big do I need to go

Oscars and sevs are fine together. Yes, you're looking into the 125g size, more or less.

I'd expect the Oscar to eat the rams, and the mating convicts to kill everything. You could easily do one convict, though!

Im glad to hear oscars and sevs are ok together I really wanted that. And if I have to loose the rams no biggie. If I am able to find a pair of female convicts would that be ok cause I really dont want a breeding pair. I have had to deal with that before and its a pain to get rid of fry around here.

any cichlid breeding pair in a 5ft is going to wreak havoc.
Agreed. But Severums aren't as prone to outright annihilating everybody, right? I mean, they'll chase to protect the nest, but if the fish retreats it ends there as far as I've known. But I haven't bred Severums so I don't know firsthand the size of breeding territory they claim.

No experience with Sevs breeding, was told to avoid acquiring a pair to go with my Oscar for that reason. The Oscar is my main fish though, that might play a part in how the advice was given.
Sevs can get up to 12" according to their profile, depending on where the nest is that leaves a 3 foot buffer if the Oscar is on the other side of a 5 foot tank. Roughly 3 fish lengths would have me worried, but I just try to avoid those situations altogether rather than experimenting.

oops didnts see the part about not parting with the sevs

Its all good I just had to give you a hard time. I dont think I have a breeding pair with my sevs. Im pretty sure my gold is a male and my green is to small to tell plus his fins are a lil tore up. Looking at the coloration of his face I would guess my green is a male to but Im not 100% sure. So Ill plan on looking for a 125 now if I find bigger thats always better. Ill also just plan on the oscar and my sevs for now.
