How big do I need to go

i think one oscar and 2 severums would be fine in a 125 gallon with proper filtration and water changes. the rams would be very iffy due to the fact the oscar may decide to snack on them one day. 2 female convicts would probably be fine with the mix as well but personally I think I'd stick with the oscar and severums and maybe a few non-cichlid fish. perhaps a school of silver dollars or some pictus catfish.

I think I will for sure loose the rams I dont want them to be a snack lol. And I think I may not get the convits either I am also debating on a firemouth to replace them in this stocking but Idk.

I agree with 125g if you want 1 Oscar and 2 sevs. I think you could probably throw a firemouth in there as well, but definitely go with a larger one just in case. Female convicts and such would probably be safe, but honestly, asides from the Oscar and Sevs, I'd lean away from any more cichlids.

I like the idea of getting a school of pictus, though! You'd have a LOT less potential trouble with non-cichlids. Haha.

I agree with the people who said to get the oscar, keep the 2 severums and stay away from more cichlids. I'd get a trio of silver dollars or some pictus catfish as target fish for the tank. If you get anymore cichlids in that 125, you're going to have a lot of fights ending with torn fins, maybe even death.

I'd say a 125 would be fine unless the sevs bred. Until recently I'd never seen a sev over 10", then I saw a local 11"+ trio. completely rewrote what I knew about sevs.

lol...I know exactly what you mean. For the longest time I thought a 55 gallon was just fine for severums until I happened into an lfs that had a jumbo adult that was easily 10" and I realized just how large they can grow. :)

Oscars and sevs are fine together. Yes, you're looking into the 125g size, more or less.

I'd expect the Oscar to eat the rams, and the mating convicts to kill everything. You could easily do one convict, though!

agreed ive just had to move my cons out of my 200g as they were shreading everyone even fish 5 times their size, the o and the sevs will be fine but i fear the rams would eventually turn into a snack!

maybe u could add a couple of geos into the mix?

I really like the idea of a school of pictus that would be pretty cool I may just get a trio. I would rather just do the three big guys and the cats that would have a lower bio load and easier to keep.

That will be the plan. That is until I go to the LFS and see a good looking convict or firemouth and think well it should work so why not.
