How big do thinbars get?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Beautiful thinbar. They're actually my 2nd favorite Datnioides species too. :)

JD7.62, Very rare pickup buddy. You should be proud of your new dat. Thats the biggest NTT I've ever seen.

SDS is usually witnessed in small NTT, 1.5-3" when they are young and week. I dont think their is a huge problem with SDS and NTT's at 6"+. I mean their is bound to be some cases, as in any species of fish.

I THINK the main reasons we dont see many large NTT's are because first off they are the least desired Dat, so less people have them to begin with, and they are usually the first to go when someone runs out of tank space but finds a nice ST, or IT they would like to have.

2nd the "unexperienced hobbiest" who has interest in dats will go after thin bars because they are the cheapest. (thats how I started)

3rd - they max out at only around 12" and for any fish to hit their "max size" is not the norm.

I preferably believe that any size dat is prone to SDS. I think that they are just really sensitive to the water quality and ammonia levels. Majority of experienced hobbyist know that they do tend to die off and this sways them from keeping to many of them. At one time I have had over 30 NTT's ranging from 2-8 1/2". They were my only dats that would constantly pickup various sickness. They were in no different living conditions then my other dats and actually had more filtration than the others. I have sold off all my NTT's and refuse to get more. I do find them quite striking and one of the better looking dats. They are actually quite favorable with lots of MFK members and people on TC. Plus with all this speculation about NTT's being restricted for export like ST's who knows about the market for NTT's. Just my 2 cents

Sinister j, do you have any tips on keeping this guy healthy?

Im pretty sure I know how to maintain water quality lol as my ammonia and nitrites are of course always at zero. I do waterchanges ever 5-8 days or so to keep my nitrates below 40ppm. My pH is running around 7.6. Hardness is off of the charts though cause I just use straight tap. I keep my tanks warm at 86*f.

This guy chows down on frozen krill like it is going out of style. Later in the week I am going to try frozen white fish fillets as well as frozen market shrimp and see how that goes.

I was told he was kept in brackish by the guy that traded him in(acclimated to fresh from the LFS I got him from), but in the guy also kept a silver aro in the same tank so I dont know really if it was truly brackish or not.

What is your opinion on the use of salt?
