No they get too large for that small a tank. I suggest pictus cats, synodontis, or spotted raphaels.

Nah with the right dimmensions they can mak it. 1 gulper isnt that active but 4 are. 1 would hide most the time and be entertaining while feeding

The water quality would be extremely terrible after 8"... Plus they ARE active, you just don't see them when they are because you are asleep. Nocturnal fish are more active than diurnal fish if anything, especially in the wild because they are swimming in the depths and are still swimming during night time... Diurnal fish shutdown when it gets dark.

Decide for yourself, try a search on planet catfish for fish around 8-10in max size then scour your lfs to see which of them are available.
With this size tank you will probably want an external canister for filtration.

Ypu could also do a swarm of akysis vespa dwarf bumble bee catfish or i think they are also known as stone catfish

This is bad info... Look for catfish with 5-6" max size AT MOST.

I dont know if anyone is right. With the right filtration and maintainence, you can do a 10" cat. I have a 72 bowfront so i alittle more than 2x a 30g. I have a 11" niger cat, 4" stripped raphael, 4" irwini, 2x 2" spotted raphael, 3" flagtail porthole, 12" severum, 6" severum, 3" frontosa, 2x 4" bichir, 4" royal pleco, 4" BN pleco, 2" gold nugget, 4" SAL and a 6" clown loach. all are fed M-W-F and with 50% weekly water changes, pH is 6.8, 0-amm, 0-nitrite and traces of nitrate. (i know some city water sucks but memphis water comes straight from the aquafer without nitrate so yes, my params are correct).

so if you cut my stock in half, it still excedes a 10" cat in a 30 g by far without any trouble. maintainence is key and frequent small feeding vs fewer larger feedings will help reduce changed of overloading beneficial bacteria and resulting in amm and nitrite spikes.

Just because the fish can fit in the tank and you can maintain good water quality does not mean its a good habitat for the fish. 10" cat in a 30x18 tank is the same as if I stuck you in a room thats under 2 foot deep, and 6ft wide. Wow, that sounds awesome doesnt it, a plethora of room.
