I am hurting :( because I am going to give my Silver away because I can't keep it much longer. Maybe I could keep a black. I read all the posts and stickies on minimum tank sizes but don't know what to believe. Please name your species and its tank size. If you can really upgrade then to what maximum size? Has any Aro been kept in a 120 for life? Liz has a big one in a 180 and it seems happy from her posts. Surely everyone cannot place a 280 or 400 gallon tank in their house. Do Silvers stop growing at 2 feet in smaller tanks or do they continue to grow to 36 inches or rarely 40 inches. Do you know of a MFK member that had their tank busted by a large Aro? Does it just break the lid or can it split the seam of a tank? Sorry about all the questions but any answers appreciated.

I would not give up my arow if i were you!!! My arow is absolutely fine in the 180gal..Arow cannot break the glass and cause the seams to burst.. there are many people with arows in a huge tank with many many other fish in the tank as tank mates.. if you put all this together it comes out the same as having an arow in a tank by himself.. and mine has the whole tank except for adonis on bottom.. please please keep your arow.. he is much better off with you because you love him ..just put a weight on the top..arows jump out of any size tank.. it could be a 500gal and you would find them on the floor someday if you did not weigh it down.

I agree with Liz.. Here i've see 2' arrows in 3'x12x12 tank.. They seem ok.. I mean they r still living.. But they have good filteration on the tanks.. Keep the guy..

i know our 220 gal was the same width and the same length but just higher then my 180gal so it would not have any significant difference for the arow.. in swimming and turning.. my arow is 27 inches and almost 5 years old..When you have less gallons of water you just do more water changes.. lets face it .. arows do not belong in the aquarium really.. not just because of the size of the tank totally but because they are jumpers..also i have never heard of any arow ever busting glass on any tank.. they are elegant swimmers ..they do not swim so fast with out thinking .. they bump their faces from jumping.. up! In the wild they leap high for insects and birds..must be alot of them in the wild that end up on the side of the river banks ..dried up too.

You don't need a 400 gallon tank....a 180 would be nice though. Arowana are very flexible and can turn in a more narrow tank than most other fish...and it's gonna take a long time (if ever) for the fish to get 3ft. The first 24" are fast, then growth slows to a crawl.

I have a 240 Long for my Arowana...8'x2'x2'. I like the extra 2ft.

If you think you can't afford it, realize you can go big without spending 5 grand if you shop around and build some stuff yourself. My tank was about $1200. I'm a poor student at the moment, I can't work as many hours I'd like to, so that was A LOT of money to me. However...I got it piece by piece so I didn't fork it all over at once.

Keep the hope alive!!

I use to keep a 30 inch plus aro in a standard 125...Everything was fine until the 30 inch mark-Then there just wasn't enough room for him.He started to try and jump and bully everything around...He eventually just kept himself looking like ****...I had no one to donate the thing to up here-So had to kill it-

Now I have another silver aro and jardini-
they are housed in a 500 gal...6' x 4' x 3'

my silver is about 15" give or take and inch he is in a 210 gal (7'x2'x2') as long as you can keep the water params good i think i believe you could keep it in what you have. i don't plan on getting rid of mine. when ever he/she dies i will save up and get a black( slower growth rate). eventually i'd like to have a pond 13'x13'x3' deep i can put my RTC and ARO in for the summer and look into heating it for winter.:D:headbang2

i keep my bigger aros in a 400. but thats just me and i have other fish with them.

my leichardt is in my 150 and honestly i don't plan to move him. if need be he will get moved, but i dont have plans to do so.

my neighbor down the street from me kept a silver aro in a 70gal tank from 2" to about 30" which is crazy. but he looks freakin PERFECT!!! we jus recently moved him to a 210 which he has no plans on moving from.

i wouldn't give up your aro, he's in best hands with his original owner unless it went somewhere worth the move.

I think I owe Countrygirlforlife an Arowana now since I promised her one. I think I would rather buy her one than reneg on the deal. I could get her 2 for the price of one on the second tuesday of the month where I bought mine. I thought it would be easy to give him up but he has been with me for over a year. I nursed him when he suffered from paint fumes and he just grew stronger and stronger. He is a really calm Aro now and turns gracefully in the tank. He does have a personality like no other fish I have owned. Natalie, can I buy you one or two if you wait and you will have the opportunity to raise one from 6 inches? My 9 year old son calls him the "Incredible Cricket eating fish" and that is what he is. I cannot sleep good at night knowing he will be gone.

tank size is quite relative.....

a circular pond only 12" deep, with a small diameter of say, 3-4 feet, would be better than a 522 tank or even a 622 tank in my opinion....

when it comes down to it.....i think an aro is in the best "tank" when the owner is willing to raise it properly....

keep it
