I think I owe Countrygirlforlife an Arowana now since I promised her one. I think I would rather buy her one than reneg on the deal. I could get her 2 for the price of one on the second tuesday of the month where I bought mine. I thought it would be easy to give him up but he has been with me for over a year. I nursed him when he suffered from paint fumes and he just grew stronger and stronger. He is a really calm Aro now and turns gracefully in the tank. He does have a personality like no other fish I have owned. Natalie, can I buy you one or two if you wait and you will have the opportunity to raise one from 6 inches? My 9 year old son calls him the "Incredible Cricket eating fish" and that is what he is. I cannot sleep good at night knowing he will be gone.

Thats the nicest sweetest words i have heard all day.!!!.. :D:D

my 12'' jardini is in a 75 gallon. hell be moved to a 120 next month along with his birchir friend.

shure you could keep a silver aro in a 120 for life, but dont bet on it dieing of old age. silvers get huge, easily 30" if taken care of properly, usually much bigger given enough time and space. just because people keep them in small tanks, like a 180, doesnt make it right. any silver is going to out grow a 180 one day, and if it doesnt, its stunted IMO. dont keep your aro just to make yourself feel good, think about whats going to make the aro feel good and live a happy life.

ya i know im going to upgrade it to a custom 1,200 gallon one day in the far future. then ill stock the 120 with something cool.

My silver has grown to nearly 22" in a standard 125 gallon tank with large tankmates. I do 30% water changes twice a week. I'm looking for a new residence in the spring time and I'll definitely be upgrading to at least a 180 gallon tank. I want something at least two feet wide and six feet long.

tank size is quite relative.....

a circular pond only 12" deep, with a small diameter of say, 3-4 feet, would be better than a 522 tank or even a 622 tank in my opinion....

when it comes down to it.....i think an aro is in the best "tank" when the owner is willing to raise it properly....

keep it

What are you talking about? First of all I would never keep a large aro in anything less then 24" deep(they don't just stay at the top). With the dimensions you gave, I picture a small kiddie pool and that isn't gonna work.

Part of raising your aro properly is providing the proper size tank. Keep your silver as long as you like. You will see it everyday and you will know if the tank it is in is too small. Everyone has varying opinions on this, I believe a tank 3 times the length of the aro, with a width at least equal to the aro is needed. Also this has nothing to do with turning space, it's all around swimming space.

Just adding my 0.2 Personally i find that space depend on the particular arowana personality (flames coming i think..) I have a huge green in 8x3x3 (water measurements. The tank is taller by another 2') and he just keeps to one side only leaving the other 2 thirds to the kois etc...

While in another tank with 6 arows. one is becoming the alpha and crowds the other five into a corner while he happily cruises the empty space by himself. It's only during feeding time when the every one is chasing the food that you see them spread over the tank. this one is also 3' wide.

However i think that if you do keep an arow at least 5' by 2' and at least 18" of water should be there for them. smaller than that well! it's your choice but hey be kind to the fish. cheers.
