How big of tank will I ultimately need?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I would say a 450gallon would be a good choice or at least some tank with dimensions of 6ftx3ftx2ft minimum(LxWxH). The pond idea is really the most affordable but if you do want a tank make sure its a behemoth because right now your really limiting the fish ability to turn and have swimming space, a good rule of thumb is at least 2-3 times the length of the fish for swimming space. ~Trent

Thanks so much for the great info--I really want to keep this fish, but need to evaluate whether it is realistic for me--and what is in the best interest of the fish as well! :)

I would say these larger cats can get to about 20 years.

He's like to hang out in lots of different places in the tank--but mostly hides here to get away from the rose line barbs--they love to take turns dive bombing his tail and just generally annoying him! :)

Here's some pics of a big one. These are a few of the big boys from the dallas world aquarium that are recent additions to the amazon tank, each one was between 24-28" I would say and about as big around as a basketball almost in girth. Enjoy ~Trent

Wow--that's great! Thanks for sharing those!!!! Amazing pics!!!

I really like them because they are so prehistoric looking! They also look so mean, but are in reality such gentle fish...

Thanks again! :)

Isn't it weird seeing such a beast with little barbs lol
