yes, it is a fimbriated eel. very agressive and get large.

How big is the eel currently?

I don't see a problem with you keeping it in a smaller aquarium for a little bit provided that it's not huge until you get an appropriate aquarium for it to live in for life. Besides, you'll want to quarantine it for a while to make sure it's healthy, so the smaller aquarium should make things easier on you in that department.
