how can some people keep their fish without water test kits?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
In all my years of fish keeping, I've never used test kits. I've made a lot of mistakes and learn from them. I feel that if you test all the time you lose the passion of fish keeping.

Here's my 90 that hasn't been tested in years. I have test kits just don't ever use them uploadfromtaptalk1391878040039.jpg

I don't test anymore. I under-feed, under-stock, and do water changes when my schedule lets me, which ends up being about once a month. I also make a point to only keep hardy fish that won't mind this. And I keep pothos in my tank.

I don't have a current photo, but it's a barebottom 75g with a mountain of driftwood, some PVC pipes, dim lighting and a fistfull of small, spiky catfish. One planted slightly anaerobic AC 500, and a Magnum HOT with a cube sponge prefilter.

not looking to argue or flame, but if the fish are showing effects in there behavior no mater how subtle they are, they have already been subject. best to keep nitrates below 20ppm nitrate and not have there behavior influenced by water quality. internal dmg starts at 25 ppm, 20ppm is to give a buffer before water toxicity starts to dmg internal organs. sorry just not get the logic. if behavior is altered then dmg being done.

+1 ,,testing on a semi-regular basis is smart ...barring that a test kit on hand to know why fish are behaving "strangely" is a real good idea... if you can test when you think there is something wrong you get instant feedback and can start to fix a problem...if you must wait till the next time"you can get to the lfs"... the problem is just getting worse...:)

Since I added pothos to my tank I reduced my testing to only once every month or two, and it's almost always right what I expect it to see. I do test my reef tank much more frequently so I know how to dose the additives properly.

All I ever test is my Crystal Red Shrimp tank, and even then all I test is the TDS.
