How can you tell who's winning a lip lock?

Fish is plural and singular. There is no such word as "fishes".

The grammatical errors aside, why are you letting your fish fight if they are tearing each other up? That is not a very responsible thing to do in this hobby. And worse, why would you bet money on fish fighting? That is illegal. Like cock fighting or dog fighting. It's animal cruelty.

I was put off by your rudeness and lack of displayed education (in spelling, English and biology), but after looking at where you are from, I understand that English is probably not your fist language, so I can't fault you there. But your self proclaimed righteousness is only hilarious because of the fact that you're the one who is incorrect.

To the OP: I apologize for the derailment of the topic. With the exception of the animal guy, everyone here has given you good feedback on the topic of lip locking (not to be confused with fighting). Do you have some fish that are locking lips frequently?

Cool. I freaked out when I first got into cichlids and my collection of convicts were constantly lip locking for a couple of days as they had to figure out who was the top dog. :)

I'll share an interesting lip locking story.

I have 2m3f Guianacara in a 125g tank. Originally, one male was a lot larger, but over time the smaller male has started to catch up. I never had any aggression in the group, beyond an occasional nip or when the pair was guarding offspring. One day I noticed the two males were flaring at each other, after a few minutes of flaring they lip locked! They literally went at it for at least 30-45 minutes! Finally, the sub male let go and backed up from the dominate male. After he let go, there was some chasing and the whole ordeal was over. There were marks right above the lips (is that anatomically correct?) on both fish, but no evidence of the scuffle anywhere else. I have not witnessed any aggression since then, and both males will swim in close proximity to each other.

So in a nutshell, that is my idea of lip locking.

I am with the others when they say this is not a good thing to do with your fish because, in the end they both lose and you will wind up either with a dead fish or one with an infection. And why put all that time and energy only to wind up with crappy fish all ripped up?
