How did you get started in the hobby?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I got started at a young age with bettas, they were my first fish obsession and the only fish I was allowed to keep as a child, it wasnt until many years later that I finally started my own small tropical tanks with the help of a good friend, I kept fish like danios, tetras, plecos, and khuli loaches, To this very day for one reason or another I have yet to own the Monster tank of my dreams! I drool over the thought of arowanas and giant catfish!!!! Until then I will have to live vicariously through the monster tanks of others!

I wanted a tank but I never bothered with one, then my gf got one then I decided it was time for me to go get one, so I got myself a 10gallon.

Tiny little betta bowl.

My mom kept a 10 gal. off and on while we were little it had goldfish in it most of the time. At about age 10 I talked her in to letting me get my own tank so I got a 10 gal. that sat on the bottom of the stand of her tank. From then on I took care of both tanks and at about 16 I got a 29gal. When I moved out and got my own house I bought another 29 gal. and a 55 gal. Right now one of the 10 gal. and the 55 gal. are set up at my brothers house the only way his 3 kids could get fish. They just live two empty lots away so I get to see them all the time and help them with maintanece. I've kept just about everything the local fish store has at one time or another haven't gotten in to saltwater yet but maybe someday. Looking to buy another tank 100 gal. or bigger soon. Yeah this hobby can take over the lfs in the three bigger towns in my area all know me too well and know that I can't ever come in to just look seems like I always end up walking out with something.

Hello kababayan!

I first was interested into fish keeping because of my Mom, she used to bring me to various petshops and gave me two 10-gal tank. After a while a 35gal tank for my birthday.
This is how it all started.

My mother’s father (grandfather) use to work at a university with animals (testing, breeding) he was a professor of some sort, when my mother was growing up, she always had tanks and aquariums around, they use to have a garage full of stands and aquariums, more so than your local fish supply! (so she says) he use to make everything most things from scratch, he showed me how to make a thermostat and heater (this was before they were 15 bux each) lighting fixtures and aquariums. They use to breed all types of oddballs (and being part of the government) he was allowed to keep RESTRICTED fish, (Piranhas and other highly illegal fish)

Dad also had a very impressive collection, his fish (now all sold) were in a number of tanks around their house the most impressive fish were his 2 treasured tanks 8x5x6 and his 6x6x6 cube.

He has had a huge collection sold recently, as he is getting old and no longer has the time to devote to his monsters, some fish included 3-4ft RTC, a 3ft ,X back aro C.I.T.I.E.S certified, pair of Peacock Bass about hitting the 1.5-2ft mark a 3 giant gouramis each about 40cms
There were many more smaller, but they were the some of the bigger ones.

I got my first tank when I was 5 it was a 2ft tank have had some weird stuff in that, from prawns, mullet, yabbies/crayfish, goldfish, snails, planted aquarium, and up till recent, it was home to a 8inch redclaw yabbie, which died about 3 months ago! Now it plays home to a group of cichlids!

From there, the tanks have gotten bigger and heavier and more expensive, the stock list has been HUGE, ranging from the exotic, and extremely rare, to the common pleb fish.

Also, I think hanging out with a lot of people who are pretty into aquariums/fish (rare and exotics) doesn’t help with addiction, I mean hobby, they are always selling and showing videos of their new additions, making it hard NOT to buy similar species.

I think I need new friends! LOL

So to answer, kind of grew from a combination of things I think that fish are in our family blood!

LOL!

I’ve sold my tanks, I have a 5ft which I am going to set up with archers, that will be my monsters until I have enough money to do some renovations, I was thinking something along the lines of a feature wall. Most of the tanks may have been sold, and the fish gone, but the hobby still lives and thrives with in me =)

wow, that's a long post. :P sorry!

honestly im not sure....i have always been interested in fish, the sea, fishing, etc but where that interest spawned form im not sure....

doing a course on Aquaculture....thats helping to fuel my thinking BIG!!

My wife wanted a fish tank. After we kept killing fish (because we wouldn't let it finish cycling) we just decided to buy a bunch of feeder goldfish. I had a few survive and I took over the aquarium deal. Plus the missus is grossed out by washing fish poop out of the filters. lol

And then I found this site and now I'm crazed.
