How did you get started in the hobby?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
we had a tank at home when i was young and not really interested in fish at the time but my interest started when a friend bought a 5' tank and i helped set it up with him.
after a few months visiting his house and spending more time looking at his tank than socialising i decided to get one myself.
a 45uk gal tank was for sale with 4 5'' red belly p's and i bought it. i then sold the p's and bought some bady reds to grow myself.
the rest is history its been around 7-8 years keeping fish and still love it.

Well i was only 6 when my mother got me a two foot tank with a few Axolotl's which a had for just over a year before they breed (no young survived) i gave them up until i was about 12, a new nabour move in next door, he had a two foot tank with gold fish in it and i hated gold fish and told him he should get tropical fish he did not want to so i went and bought my own one foot tank and have never turned back.

I fell in love with the hobby not long ago. My hubby got me 2 african dwarf frogs that were in a gallon tank. They didnt last long. When they died, he went and got me 2 ACF's. (Cujo and Carrie) I still have my frogs, but they got bigger. So I got a 10 G tank, and added fish.
I am so hooked! I have a bigger tank now, and just got some more frogs, a rope fish, a oscar, a HUGE pleco, and a jack dempsey. LMAO....all those fish I just got this week! Needless to say, hubby and I are HOOKED :headbang2 :grinyes:

great question.

my buddy started me back in 98.he was into fighting fish and he fought them.so i wanted to join.then got tired of them, then moved to cichlids>>>then from there to here.

p.s stopped fighting the fighting fish long time ago.why waste them and your money juss keep them.very preetyful fish to keep

i've always had an interest in fish since i was a kid and started with a small tropical tank of cardinals and it just grew from there :)

I started a 10g tank for my 2-1/2 yr old daughter to teach her about fish and the responsibilties of taking care of something. Now its rekindled the passion for animals that I used to have in my youth living on a farm. It's been great for both of us, if only my wife felt the same....:D

I got my first tank about 1971 as a kid. It was one of those steel framed 10gal. tanks made by Metaframe. Started with a few guppies, and soon had more guppies than water!

My buddy gave me a 30 gallon tank setup. My buddy recomended that I get a couple oscars and I sent my girlfriend out to pick 2 up. So she comes back with 4 oscars, she felt sorry for the oscars in the fish section and she thaught they were so pretty, she couldnt resist. Not having done any reasearch and not knowing anything about this fish we thaught it was fine. So over a peroid of a couple of weeks my girlfriend decided to buy some more. Being overstocked with 6, 3" oscars things went down hill. I ended up loosing 3 due to inexpirence, and I gave all but one away. Finally a couple months down the road I bought a 150 gallon and did all the reasearch and learned a great deal. I now have two oscars and they are happy and healthy along with all my other fish. I will always keep fish till I get old and die. Couldnt ask for a better more rewarding hobby in my eyes!
