Hehe I am having fun reading your stories and looking at pictures here at MFK. I just got curious. I am not sure if this has been posted somewhere else. So yeah, how did you guys get started with the fishkeeping hobby? Any interesting stories?

Was working for the trash company and found a 55 gallon in the trash one day. Took it home and cleaned it up,it held water. Need less to say i went and bought a full grown oscar and put it in.When it died in a month(from no water changes ang under filtration)i started doing ressearch on oscars(no internet back then)in the library.one day at the library i meet a female and started a freind ship with her. One day we skipped school and went back to her house(parents were not home)and to my surprise when i walked in i saw the biggest oscar tank i had ever seen in my life. Need less to say i got lucky twice that day(lol)But later as i got to know her dad better he taught me alot on raising oscars and over the years i have always seem to run into people that have a lot of knowledge on fishkeeping so my hobby progressed better and better. To me nothing beats the knowledge of fellow fish keepers when you are a newbie(not even the internet)

I agree. But, honestly, I admit that I'm a bit intimidated with this forum lol :newbie:

Anyway, I think this thread will get closed soon. I just saw the similar thread to this. But, yet, feel free to reply and keep it going.

As for me, nothing special. I felt lonely because I can't have a dog so decided to set up an aquarium instead. Being a newbie (and still is :p) my first platys died as well. So I researched more and so far my polys are ok except for one. Boyfriend seems to cooperate as well with water changes, him carrying the buckets full of tank water :woot:

I tossed a ball at the fair and landed the goldfish 3 years ago. Typical right. Then I freaked out when I foind out I was abusing it and decided to put it in a 2 gallon tupperware, and scrambled to get money to buy food and a tank. He died and I felt so bad. Then I got a 10 gallon shortly after that and got 6 goldfish. Fail. They lived but I felt like euthanizing them because I felt so bad having them there. From then on I swore to myself not to get any fish I can not keep adequetaly. From there I started breeding Ghost shrimp, and decided to get a fish besides a goldfish. I wanted to get a dwarf gourami. Good choice right? The walmart guy netted up a 3-spot, I thought it was a dwarf. -_- Then I grew her out in a 10 for 2 years, feeling bad again. Not really growing out right. I showed my parents I really cared for this fish, and this summer I got a 55g. (I didn't even know people kept tanks this big in their houses before I got here lol) And now I feel so happy she got the swimming room she deserved.

And now I got myself a 55g with a firemouth, pictus, senegal bichir, the 3-spot, clown barb, and some danios, And a 10 with two blue rams.

First chapter of my fishkeeping, and I got all the info I learned from this site, and you guys. :)

I remember life before the internet
When having a beeper was a big deal
When MTV actually played videos
When Super Tecmo Bowl was the king of sports games
Ah....the good ole days.

My story is not too far from Budda. My Dad met someone with a 55 for sale. He bought it for me (back in 1993). I loaded it with four 6" Snakeheads. They only ate feeders and krill, which got expensive as a freshman in college. They were vicious! Even though I do not use live feeders now, there is something pretty cool about feeders being annihilated.

Back then the LFS had a good staff and were my best source of information.

I always had fish tanks growing up, but then we moved when I was 10 and we never got another tank after that....

Well, when I turned 18 (2 yrs ago) I met my now fiance, and I moved in with him. He was on a business trip to Texas for 2 weeks, and I was stuck there with nothing to do, so I ran across a free 10 Gallon tank, and bought myself a Fancy Comet to go in it. I then bought another one because he seemed lonely... They were in that tank for a year before we bought a house, and then someone gave us a 30 gallon tank...

We then bought a preformed pond on CL for $20.. I wasn't into the pond idea, so we bought a 150 gallon acrylic tank... And that's where it all started..

I now have:

6000 gal pond
1500 gal indoor tank (soon to be cichlid grow out tank)
150 gal
125 gal
110 gal
75 gal
55 gal x2
30 gal x5 (these are the only ones not filled)

My dad kept fish when I was a kid. My first personal tank was a few years ago... 20 gallon long with Zebra danios, platys, yoyo loaches. THOSE were the days ;)

Still have the tank! It was recently the 20 gallon in my signature, which has now been emptied and I just installed an awesome 3D background to set it up as a hillstream loach tank.

My first tank was a spur of the moment 10 gallon tank. I just decided I wanted a fish and fish tank.
