Hey. I'm looking for tips on how to get my arowana and gar off of live and onto prepared foods like shrimp tilapia and pellets. Are there any tricks or tips to making this transition? Are they like dogs that after a couple days they'll eat anything?

I'm not used to keeping these fish I am
more used to my cichlids and they pretty much eat anything.

Thanks in advance my arowana has been on a diet of pbass and not touching the tilapia fillets or the shrimp. Or the food sticks.

Thank
you

Arowanas are pretty stubborn, but if you starve them they'll eventually take. And don't worry, a foot long arowana can already go for a month without eating with absolutely no problems. However, if the arowana is under 6 inches, I'd let it grow a little.

Just starve them for about three days, and toss a pellet in. Even if they grab them, then spit them out, you're making progress. Eventually they'll eat them.

The thing to remember is to NOT give in, otherwise you basically have to start all over again.

might try moving to smaller already dead fish that are whole like silversides, then move to market shrimp, then stuff pellets inside em!

Jux- ok sounds like it's similar to dogs then. Thank you!

Won- I could also try that. Thank you for your response.

This place is fast! I like that.

Oh also it's anywhere from 9-11 inches not quite a foot yet. You think this would work with gar? Or should I go post in that area for advice on them? The gar is about a foot. It's roughly an inch longer then my arowana. Maybe two inches

From what I've researched gar and aro don't make good tank mates, but there are many here on MFK that do keep them together. Your aro is big enough to starve until it eats pellets. Once you get it eating pellets you can expand to a wide variety of different foods

BD- thanks for the info. I will fast them for a couple days. If it gets to crazy I'll pull the gar out and it can chill with my cichlids. The arowana and my little Ray can have that tank.

Mine did nothing but live also, i guess i got lucky cuz i was able to throw some raw shrimp in and he loved it. Then i went to talapia to feed my gars and he loved that too. No pellets but frozen foods beat live. Ive herd aros can go 3 months starving. i wouldnt do it myself but i guess plenty of people on here have.. Good luck
